Removal & Installation



Driver's Side

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1992-1993

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    Before servicing components near or affected by the SRS (air bag) system, read and observe all SRS Service Precautions. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), in the Chassis Electrical section. Failure to observe all precautions may result in accidental airbag deployment, personal injury, or death.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.

  5. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  6.  
  7. Using a Torx® (T30) wrench, loosen the three screws.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the Torx® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

  11. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    WARNING
    When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.


    CAUTION
    Never disassemble the wheel pad.

To install:

  1. Connect the airbag connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
  4.  
  5. Using a Torx® wrench, tighten the screws to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque. If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one. When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

  7. Check the steering wheel center point.

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1994-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  11. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    WARNING
    When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.


    CAUTION
    Never disassemble the wheel pad.

To install:

  1. Connect the airbag connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the Torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
  4.  
  5. Using a Torx® wrench, tighten the screws to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

  5. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.

  7. Remove the 2 steering wheel lower No. 2 covers.
  8.  
  9. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 Torx® screws.
    NOTE
    Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

  11. Pull the pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    WARNING
    When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

To install:

  1. Connect the airbag connector.
  2.  
  3. Install the pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screw is caught on the screw case.
  4.  
  5. Using a Torx® socket wrench, torque the 2 screws to 63 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the 2 steering wheel lower No. 2 covers.
  8.  
  9. Check steering wheel center point.
  10.  

Passenger's Side

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1994-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    Before servicing components near or affected by the SRS (air bag) system, read and observe all SRS Service Precautions. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), in the Chassis Electrical section. Failure to observe all precautions may result in accidental airbag deployment, personal injury, or death.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.

  5. Remove the glove compartment door finish plate inside the glove compartment.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    NOTE
    When disconnecting the front passenger airbag connector, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  9. Remove under cover No. 2. Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Assembly in the Body Interior section.
  10.  
  11. Remove instrument lower panel No. 2.Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Assembly in the Body Interior section.
  12.  
  13. Remove glove compartment door. Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Assembly in the Body Interior section.
  14.  
  15. Remove glove compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Assembly in the Body Interior section.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 6 airbag assembly retaining bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front passenger airbag assembly.

To install:

  1. Install airbag door and front passenger airbag assembly.
    1. Install the airbag door with the 3 bolts and tighten to 65 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 screws

    5. Using a riveter, install the 2 new rivets.

    7. Install the front passenger airbag assembly with the 6 bolts. Tighten:
      CAUTION
      Make sure the front passenger airbag assembly is installed to the specified torque. If the front passenger airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the front passenger airbag assembly with a new one. When installing the front passenger airbag assembly, take care that the wiring do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.



      To instrument panel reinforcement [Diameter: 0.32 in. (8 mm)]: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
       
      To instrument panel [Diameter: 0.24 in. (6 mm)]: 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)

  3. Install the glove compartment.
  4.  
  5. Install the glove compartment door.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument panel No. 2.
  8.  
  9. Install the under cover No. 2.
    NOTE
    When installing the glove compartment, pull the airbag wire harness out from the glove compartment opening hole.


    WARNING
    Do not pull the airbag wire harnesses too strongly.

  11. Connect the airbag connector.
  12.  
  13. Put the connector on the glove compartment door finish plate.
  14.  
  15. Install the glove compartment door finish plate to the glove compartment.
  16.  

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1997-1999

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.

  5. Remove the lower instrument cover inside the No. 2 under cover.
    WARNING
    When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

  7. Pull up the connector.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front passenger airbag connector.

  11. Remove the front door scuff plate.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cowl side trim.
  14.  
  15. Remove the No. 2 under cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the No. 1 lower retainer.
  20.  
  21. Remove the finish upper panel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the CD auto changer.
  24.  
  25. Remove the A/C unit duct.
  26.  
  27. Remove the 2 bolts, 4 nuts and front passenger airbag assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the front passenger airbag assembly to the instrument panel and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Make sure that no foreign objects are trapped between the airbag bag, and within the module. Do not damage the strap when installing the module. If the front passenger airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the front passenger airbag assembly with a new one.

  3. Connect the airbag connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the airbag connector to the No. 2 under cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the No. 2 under cover.
  8.
