Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1992-1993

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Run engine at idle speed with A/C on for approx. 10 minutes.
  4.  
  5. Stop engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove battery and bracket.
  8.  
  9. Recover refrigerant from refrigeration system.
  10.  
  11. Remove cooling fan.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect discharge hose and suction hose from compressor.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect connector from magnetic clutch.
  16.  
  17. Remove compressor:
    1. Loosen the drive belt.
    2.  
    3. Remove four bolts and compressor.

To install:

  1. Install compressor with four bolts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Connect connector to magnetic clutch.
  6.  
  7. Connect discharge hose and suction hose to compressor. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    NOTE
    Hoses should be connected immediately after the caps have been removed.

  9. Evacuate air in refrigeration system and charge with refrigerant.
  10.  
  11. Inspect for leakage of refrigerant.
  12.  
  13. Install cooling fan.
  14.  
  15. Install bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install battery.
  18.  
  19. Inspect A/C operation.
  20.  

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1994-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Run engine at idle speed with A/C on for approx. 10 minutes.
  4.  
  5. Stop engine.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect negative terminal cable from battery.
  8.  
  9. Discharge refrigerant from refrigeration system.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the discharge and suction hoses. Cap the open fittings immediately to keep moisture or dirt out of the system.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the connector from the magnetic clutch.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 2 nuts, 2 bolts, and the compressor.

To install:

  1. Install the compressor:
    1. Install the 2 stud bolts.
    2.  
    3. Install the compressor with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  3. Install the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the drive belt tension.
  6.  
  7. Connect the connector to the magnetic clutch.
  8.  
  9. Connect the discharge and suction hoses.
    NOTE
    Hoses should be connected immediately after the caps have been removed.

  11. Evacuate air in refrigeration system and charge with refrigerant.
  12.  
  13. Inspect for leakage of refrigerant, and correct as necessary.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Inspect A/C operation.

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1997-1999

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Run engine at idle speed with A/C on for approx. 10 minutes.
  4.  
  5. Stop engine.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect negative terminal cable from battery.
  8.  
  9. Discharge refrigerant from refrigeration system.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt, nut and disconnect the discharge and suction hoses. Cap the open fittings immediately to keep moisture or dirt out of the system.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator. Refer to Alternator Removal & Installation in the Engine Electrical section.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the compressor connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 2 bolts, nut and alternator drive belt adjusting bar bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 3 bolts and compressor.

To install:

  1. Install the compressor and tighten the 3 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the generator drive belt adjusting bar bracket with 2 bolts and a nut. Tighten to:

    Bolt -A-: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Bolt -B-: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Nut: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Install the alternator.
    NOTE
    Hoses should be connected immediately after the caps have been removed.

  6.  
  7. Connect the discharge hose and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Lubricate a new O-ring with compressor oil and install the hose.
  8.  
  9. Install the suction hose:
    1. Lubricate 2 new O-rings with the compressor oil and install the hose.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolt and nut:

      Piping joint: 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm)
       
      Block joint: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)

    5. Install the suction hose clamping bolt.
    6.  
    7. Connect the wire harness clamp.
    8.  

  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Evacuate air in refrigeration system and charge with refrigerant.
  16.  
  17. Inspect for leakage of refrigerant, and correct as necessary.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Inspect A/C operation.
