NOTE
-Cold- and -Hot- in these sentences express the temperature of the coils themselves. -Cold- is from 14°F (-10°C) to 122°F (50°C) and -Hot- is from 122°F (50°C) to 212°F (100°C).

  1. Check that the spark occurs.
    1. Remove the ignition coil.
    2.  
    3. Remove the spark plug.
    4.  
    5. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil, and connect the ignition coil connector.
    6.  
    7. Ground the spark plug.
    8.  
    9. Check if spark occurs while engine is being cranked.
      NOTE
      To prevent excess fuel being injected from the injectors during this test, do not crank the engine for more than 5-10 seconds at a time.

  3. If the spark does not occur, do the following tests as necessary, until problem is corrected.
  4.  
  5. Check connection of ignition coil and igniter connectors. If necessary, connect correctly.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the high tension cords, as applicable. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance. Maximum resistance: 25 kOhms per cord. If the resistance is greater than maximum, check the terminals. If necessary, replace the high tension cord.

  9. Check power supply of high tension coil and igniter, as applicable:
    1. Turn ignition switch to ON.
    2.  
    3. Check that there is battery voltage at ignition coil positive terminal.
    4.  
    5. If necessary, check wiring between ignition switch to ignition coil and igniter.
    6.

  11. Check resistance of ignition coil:
    1. Inspect the primary coil resistance: Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the positive and negative terminals. Primary Resistance:

      Cold: 0.70-0.94 Ohms
       
      Hot: 0.85-1.10 Ohms
       

    2.  
    3. Inspect the secondary coil resistance: Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the positive and high tension terminal. Secondary Resistance:

      Cold: 10.8-14.9 kOhms
       
      Hot: 13.1-17.5 kOhms
       

    4.  
    5. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the ignition coil.
    6.

  13. Inspect the camshaft position sensor:
    1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals. Resistance:

      Cold: 835-1400 Ohms
       
      Hot: 1,060-1,645 Ohms
       

    2.  
    3. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
    4.

  15. Inspect the crankshaft position sensor:
    1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals. Resistance:

      Cold: 1,630-2,740 Ohms
       
      Hot: 2,065-3,225 Ohms
       

    2.  
    3. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
    4.

  17. Check the IGT signal from the ECM.
    1. Check wiring between ECM and igniter, and then try another ECM.
    2.

  19. Try another igniter.
  20.
