Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1992-1996

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds to perform any work on the vehicle once the negative battery cable has been disconnected.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Place a drain pan under the hydraulic motor and disconnect the pressure hose from the motor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the radiator upper hose.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the hydraulic motor return hose.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet pipe.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the two oil hoses from the oil cooler pipes.
  14.  
  15. On Canadian models, remove the No. 7 relay block.

  17. Remove the cruise control actuator wire from the clamp.

  19. Remove the 2 upper radiator mounting brackets.

  21. Remove the radiator and cooling fan as an assembly.

  23. Remove the A/T oil cooler hoses.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator lower hose.

  27. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the cooling fan from the radiator.

To install:

  1. Install the radiator supports.

  3. Position the cooling fan assembly into place on the radiator and tighten the mounting bolts to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower radiator hose and the oil cooler hoses to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Install the radiator and cooling fan as an assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the 2 radiator upper mounting brackets and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). After installation, check that the rubber cushion of the support is not depressed.

  11. Install the cruise control actuator wire to the clamp.
  12.  
  13. If removed, install the No. 7 relay block.
  14.  
  15. Connect the oil cooler and lower radiator hoses .
  16.  
  17. Connect the hydraulic motor return hose and the upper radiator hose.
  18.  
  19. Use new gaskets and connect the pressure hose to the hydraulic motor. Tighten the union bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Refill the engine with coolant.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Refill the cooling fan (power steering) reservoir tank with fluid.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  30.  
  31. Bleed the cooling fan hydraulic system and the cooling system.
  32.  
  33. Check the automatic transmission fluid level. Do not overfill.
  34.  
  35. Recheck the engine coolant level.
  36.  

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1997-1999

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds to perform any work on the vehicle once the negative battery cable has been disconnected.
  2.  
  3. Remove the No. 1 cooling fan:
    1. On Canadian models, disconnect the relay block (for daytime running light system) from battery hold-down clamp.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the cooling fan connector.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the No. 1 ECT switch wire connector.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the No. 1 ECT switch wire clamps.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 bolts and the cooling fan.

  5. Remove the No. 2 cooling fan:
    1. Drain the engine coolant.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the radiator upper hose from the radiator.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the cooling fan connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 3 bolts and the cooling fan.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following:
    1. Tighten the upper radiator support bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the cooling fan bolts to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Refill the fluids.
    6.  
    7. Bleed the cooling system.
    8.  
    9. Check for leaks.
