Lower Control Arms

Lexus ES300 1992-1996


CAUTION
The air bag system (SRS or SIR) must be disarmed before removing the lower control arm. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheel(s).
  6.  
  7. Remove the fender apron seal, as applicable.

  9. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap from the halfshaft and remove the halfshaft locknut.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left and right stabilizer bar end brackets from the lower control arms.

  15. Remove the bolt and two nuts and disconnect the lower arm from the ball joint.

  17. Remove the halfshaft from the axle hub. Secure the shaft out of the way using wire.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the shaft joint boot or ABS sensor rotor.

  19. Remove the bolts from the front side of the lower control arm.

  21. Remove the bolts and nuts from the rear side of the lower control arm and remove control arm from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Place the lower control arm onto the vehicle and temporarily install the rear mounting nut and bolt.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm bushing stopper to the lower control arm shaft. Install the bolts on the front side of the control arm and tighten to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolts on the rear side of the lower control arm to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the halfshaft to the axle hub.
  8.  
  9. Connect the lower control arm to the lower ball joint and tighten the fasteners to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install both side stabilizer end brackets to the lower control arm and tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Install new cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Have a helper apply the brakes and install the halfshaft locknut and tighten it to 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm). Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
  16.  
  17. Install front fender apron seal.
  18.  
  19. Install the front wheel(s).
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle to the floor and connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1997-1999

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheel(s).
  6.  
  7. Remove the side fender apron seal.

  9. Disconnect the lower suspension arm from the lower ball joint.

  11. Remove the lower suspension arm:
    1. Remove the 2 bolts on the front side of the lower suspension arm.

    3. Remove the bolt and nut on the rear side of the lower suspension arm.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lower suspension arm.
    6.  
    7. Remove the lower suspension arm bushing stopper from the lower suspension arm shaft.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following:
    1. Tighten the bolt and nut on the rear side of the lower suspension arm to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts on the front side of the lower suspension arm to 152 ft. lbs. (206 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the lower ball joint nuts and bolt to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
