Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fender apron seal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap from the end of the halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the halfshaft locknut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper and use a wire to support it out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Matchmark the rotor to the hub and remove the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ABS speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the nuts on the lower end of the strut.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect and separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the lower control arm from the ball joint by removing the three bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the driveshaft from the axle hub. Secure the shaft out of the way using a wire.
  26.  
  27. Remove the two nuts on the lower end of the strut and remove the steering knuckle.
  28.  
  29. Clamp the steering knuckle in a vise with soft jaws to protect the knuckle.
  30.  
  31. Carefully pry the dust deflector from the hub.
  32.  
  33. Remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  34.  
  35. Using SST 09520-00031 or equivalent, remove the hub from the knuckle.

  37. Using SST 09950-00020 or equivalent, remove the inner race from the hub.

  39. Remove the four bolts to the dust cover and then remove dust cover.

  41. Using snapring pliers, remove the snapring.
  42.  
  43. Take the inner race (removed from the hub) and install it on the outside of the bearing.
  44.  
  45. Using a bearing driver, drive the bearing from the steering knuckle.
  46.  

To install:

  1. Clean bearing seating surfaces with a clean, dry rag.
  2.  
  3. Using a press and SST 09608-32010 or equivalent, install the bearing into the knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the snapring.
  6.  
  7. Install the dust cover. Tighten the four bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Press the hub into the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Align the hole in the dust deflector and the hole for the ABS speed sensor and install the dust deflector.
  14.  
  15. Position the knuckle to the lower strut and install the bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower ball joint to the lower arm. Tighten the bolts to 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install and torque the nuts on the lower strut to 156 ft. lbs. (211 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the ABS speed sensor. Tighten the mounting bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Align the matchmark and install the rotor on the hub. Install the brake caliper. Torque the mounting bolts to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Have a helper apply the brakes and install the axle locknut. Torque the nut to 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm). Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
  28.  
  29. Install front fender apron seal.
  30.  
  31. Install the wheel.
  32.  
  33. Turn the wheel by hand, verify that the wheel turns without noise and without binding.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.
