1MZ-FE Engine



Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1993-1997

The ignition timing may be checked to verify the setting, but cannot be adjusted.

  1. Allow the engine reach normal operating temperature.
  2.  
  3. Connect a Lexus Hand-Held Tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
  4.  
  5. Connect a timing light to the No. 1 high tension cord for No. 4 cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for at least 90 seconds and check that idle speed is 700 plus or minus50 rpm.
  8.  
  9. Using SST 09843-18020, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC 1. With the timing light check the ignition timing. It should be: 8-12° BTDC at idle with the transmission in the neutral position. Remove the SST from the DLC1.
  10.  
  11. Further checking with the transmission in the neutral position and the engine at idle will be in the range of 7-24° BTDC.
  12.  
  13. Stop the engine and disconnect the timing light and the scan tool.

3vz-FE Engine



Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1993-1997

  1. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
  2.  
  3. Connect a tachometer to terminal IG (-) of the check connector.
    WARNING
    Never allow the tachometer test probe to touch ground; it could result in damage to the igniter and or ignition coil. Some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system; it is recommended to confirm the compatibility of the unit before use.

  5. Check the idle speed.
  6.  
  7. Connect the proper jumper wire to terminals TE 1 and E 1 of the check connector in the engine compartment.
  8.  
  9. Connect the timing light to spark plug wire for the No. 1 cylinder.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check the timing with the transmission in N position.
  12.  
  13. Check the ignition timing. If not within specifications, loosen the hold-down bolts and adjust the timing by turning the distributor.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the hold-down bolts and recheck the timing and idle speed, adjust as necessary.
    NOTE
    With the jumper wire removed, the timing mark will move between 10-20 degrees. This is controlled by the ECM.

  17. Remove the jumper wire and test equipment.
