Specific to:

Lexus ES250 1990-1991

Lexus ES300 1992-1999

  1. Temporarily install the 3 hub nuts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hole plug.
  4.  
  5. Turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks.
  6.  
  7. Return the adjuster 8 notches.
  8.  
  9. Install the hole plug.
  10.  
  11. Depress the parking brake pedal with 33 ft. lbs.
  12.  
  13. Drive the vehicle at about 31 mph on a safe, level and dry road for about .25 miles in this condition.
  14.  
  15. Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times.
  16.  
  17. Recheck and adjust parking brake pedal travel. Refer to Parking Brake Cables Adjustment.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus ES250 1990-1991

Lexus ES300 1992-1999

  1. Remove rear wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove rear disc brake assembly:
    1. Remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the disc brake assembly.
    2.  
    3. Suspend the disc brake securely. Ensure that the hose is not stretched.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the disc.
    NOTE
    If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the wheel turns freely.

  6.  
  7. Remove shoe return springs using needle nose pliers.
  8.  
  9. Slide out the front shoe and remove the shoe adjuster.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shoe strut with the spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shoe hold-down spring, 2 cups and pin.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the tension spring and remove the front shoe.
  16.  
  17. Slide out the rear shoe.
  18.  
  19. Remove the tension spring from the rear shoe.
  20.  
  21. Remove the shoe hold-down spring, 2 cups and pin.
  22.  
  23. Using needle nose pliers, disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse order of the removal procedure, noting the following:
    1. Tighten the disc brake caliper bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the axle carrier bolt and nut of the upper side to 166 ft. lbs. (226 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the rear wheel.
