Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1992-1996

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right side front fender apron seal to gain access.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the right side tie rod end. Using the proper tool, disconnect the right side tie rod end from the knuckle assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two hydraulic return lines from the pump assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two pressure feed hoses from the pump.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the solenoid valve electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the adjusting and through-bolts on the power steering pump. Slide the power steering pump forward and remove the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts and remove the power steering pump.

To install:

  1. Install the power steering pump and temporarily tighten the adjusting and through-bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the drive belt. Adjust the drive belt tension and tighten the power steering pump bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the solenoid valve electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the two pressure feed hoses and torque the fittings to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the two return hoses.
  10.  
  11. Install the right side tie rod end and torque the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Install the right side fender apron seal.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.  
  19. Check the fluid level and bleed the power steering system. Add fluid as necessary.
  20.  

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1997-1999

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right side front fender apron seal.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the return hose.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect pressure feed line:
    1. Remove the 2 clamp plate set nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 clamp plates and 2 holders from the line.
    6.  
    7. Using SST (09631-22020), disconnect the line.
    8.

  9. Remove the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the power steering pump assembly with pressure feed line:
    1. Disconnect the connector from the oil pressure switch.
    2.  
    3. Loosen bolt A sufficiently so that pump assembly can be removed. Bolt A cannot be removed.

  13. Remove the pressure feed line:
    1. Remove the oil pressure switch from the union bolt. Be careful not to drop the switch. If the switch is dropped or damaged, replace it with a new one.
    2.  
    3. Remove the union bolt and gasket.

To install:

  1. Install the pressure feed line. Install the union bolt with a new gasket. Make sure the stopper of the tube is touching the front bracket, as shown, then tighten the union bolt to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).

  3. Install the oil pressure switch to the union bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the power steering pump assembly with pressure feed line. Temporarily tighten the 2 bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive belt and adjust the drive belt tension.
  8.  
  9. Using SST (09249-63010), tighten the A bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm). Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 11.81 in. (300 mm). Disconnect the clamp with engine wire.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the B bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the connector to the oil pressure switch.
  14.  
  15. Using SST (09631-22020), connect the pressure feed line. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 11.81 in. (300 mm).
    1. Install the 2 clamp plates and 2 holders to the tube.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolt.
    4.  
    5. Install the 2 clamp plate set nuts and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    6.

  17. Connect the return hose.
  18.  
  19. Install the right side front fender apron seal.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the power steering system.
