Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1992-1996

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor harness and brake line from the strut assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the strut.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the two nuts attaching the strut to the axle carrier.
  10.  
  11. Support the axle carrier.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear seat back and package tray trim.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper mounting nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two lower mounting bolts and remove the strut assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the strut and torque the three nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the strut to the axle carrier. Coat the nuts with engine oil and torque the nuts and bolts to 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ABS harness to the strut and torque the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the brake line to the strut and torque the retaining nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rear wheel.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear seat and package tray.
  14.  

Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1997-1999

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear seat back and package tray trim.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor harness and brake line from the strut assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar link from the strut.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the 2 nuts on the lower side of the shock absorber.

  13. Support the axle carrier.

  15. Without Electronic Modulated Suspension:
    1. Remove the cap.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the nut in middle of the suspension support. Do not remove the nut.

    5. Remove the 3 suspension support nuts.
    6.  
    7. Lower the rear axle carrier and remove the 2 bolts.
    8.  
    9. Remove the shock absorber with the coil spring.

  17. With Electronic Modulated Suspension:
    1. Disconnect the absorber control actuator connector.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09817-33190, loosen the nut in middle of the suspension support. Do not remove the nut.

  19. Remove the 3 nuts of the suspension support.
  20.  
  21. Lower the rear axle carrier and remove the 2 bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the shock absorber with the coil spring.
  24.  

To install:

  1. With Electronic Modulated Suspension:
    1. Tighten the nut in middle of the suspension support to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm) using SST (09817-33190, 09922-10010) in direction shown in the illustration. Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 13.58 inches (345 mm) with SST (09817-33190, 09922-10010).

  3. Install the strut and tighten the 3 nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut to the axle carrier. Coat the nuts with engine oil and tighten the nuts and bolts to 188 ft. lbs. (255 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the ABS harness to the strut and tighten the bolt to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the brake line to the strut and tighten the retaining nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheel.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear seat and package tray.
  14.
