Specific to:

Lexus ES300 1992-1996

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    Before servicing components near or affected by the SRS (air bag) system, read and observe all SRS Service Precautions. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), in the Chassis Electrical section. Failure to observe all precautions may result in accidental airbag deployment, personal injury, or death.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 3 minutes for the SRS memory to drain.

  5. Remove the steering wheel pad and steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Removal & Installation.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel lower finish panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Installation in the Body Interior section.
  10.  
  11. Remove the register duct.
  12.  
  13. Remove the combination switch and spiral cable:
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the screws and the switch.
    6.

  15. Remove the spiral cable. Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the intermediate yoke:
    1. Place matchmarks on the intermediate yoke and control valve shaft.
    2.  
    3. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B.
    4.

  19. Remove the intermediate yoke and bolt A.

  21. Remove the steering column assembly:
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the steering column.

To install:

  1. Install the steering column assembly, connect the connectors, and tighten the 4 set nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the intermediate yoke and temporarily tighten bolt A.
  4.  
  5. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate yoke and control valve shaft, connect the intermediate yoke, and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the spiral cable.
  8.  
  9. Install the combination switch and spiral cable:
    1. Tighten the 4 screws.
    2.  
    3. Connect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Connect the connectors.
    6.

  11. Install the register duct.
  12.  
  13. Install the instrument panel lower finish panel.
  14.  
  15. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  16.  
  17. Center the spiral cable:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the red mark. The cable will rotate about 3 turns to either left or right of the center.

  19. Install the steering wheel and pad.

  21. Check the steering wheel center point.

  5. Remove the steering wheel pad and steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Removal & Installation.

  7. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front door scuff inside plate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cowl side trim.
  12.  
  13. Remove the No.1 lower panel:
    1. Remove the 2 screws.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the hood lock control cable.
    4.

  15. Remove the lower left-hand panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Removal & Installation in the Body Interior section.

  17. Remove the lower finish panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the combination switch and spiral cable:
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the screws and the switch.
    6.

  21. Remove the spiral cable. Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.

  23. Disconnect intermediate shaft assembly:
    1. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt.

  27. Remove steering column assembly:
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the steering column.
    6.

To install:

  1. Install the steering column assembly, connect the connectors, and tighten the 4 set nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the intermediate shaft and tighten the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  5. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft, connect the intermediate shaft, and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  7. Install the spiral cable.
  8.  
  9. Install the combination switch and spiral cable:
    1. Tighten the 3 screws.
    2.  
    3. Connect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Connect the connectors.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install the lower finish panel.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower left-hand panel.
  14.  
  15. Install the No.1 lower panel, connect the hood lock control cable, and tighten the 2 screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the cowl side trim.
  18.  
  19. Install the front door scuff inside plate.
  20.  
  21. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  22.  
  23. Center the spiral cable:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.
