  4.
  5. Remove the engine assembly. For details, refer to the engine removal procedures in this section.
  6.
  7. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  8.
  9. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
  10.
  11. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks and set cylinder No.1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) for the compression stroke.
  12.
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley. Use a Crank Pulley Holder tool No. 07MAB-PY3010A and Holder Handle tool No. 07JAB-001020A or their equivalents, to hold the crankshaft pulley while removing the bolt.
  14.

If only the balance shaft belt is being removed, thread a 6 x 1.0mm x 25mm through the timing belt tensioner plate to hold the timing belt tensioner in place.

  1. Loosen the timing belt/timing balancer belt adjuster nut 2 / 3 -1 turn. Move the tension adjuster to release the belt tension and retighten the adjuster nut.

For servicing the balance shafts, front refers to the side of the engine facing the radiator. Rear refers to the side of the engine facing the firewall.

  1. Remove the rear balance shaft/gear case assembly.
  2.

The rear balance shaft drive sprocket is part of a gear case and the case is removed as a unit.

  1. Remove the rear balance shaft driven gear as follows:
    1. Remove the maintenance bolt located on the back of the engine block. The bolt is inline with the balance shaft about 3 inches behind the balance shaft sprocket.
    2.
    3. Make sure the balance shaft is still in the TDC position.
    4.
    5. Scribe a 3 inch (74mm) line from the end of a 6 x 1.0mm x 100mm bolt.
    6.
    7. With the maintenance hole sealing bolt removed, insert the 6 x 1.0mm x 100mm bolt into the maintenance hole to the scribed line to lock the rear balance shaft in the TDC position.
    8.
    9. Remove the rear balance shaft driven gear bolt and remove the gear.
