Secondary Air Injection Reaction Solenoid Valve



Operation
4.2L Engine

The secondary Air Injection Reaction (AIR) solenoid valve/pressure sensor assembly--The AIR control solenoid valve/pressure sensor assembly has a solenoid mounted valve. When the valve is open by the solenoid, pressurized air from the AIR pump flows through the control solenoid valve/pressure sensor assembly and is directed into the exhaust manifold through an outlet pipe.

Removal & Installation
4.2L Engine
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the secondary Air Injection Reaction (AIR) solenoid valve.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the AIR pump air outlet pipe from the AIR solenoid valve.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nut (1) securing the transmission fluid level indicator tube (2) to the AIR solenoid valve.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator tube (2) from the AIR solenoid valve stud (3).
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 AIR solenoid valve studs (3).
  12.  
  13. Remove the AIR solenoid valve (4) and the gasket (5) from the engine.

To install:

  1. Install the AIR solenoid valve (4) and the gasket (5) to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the 2 AIR solenoid valve studs (3) and tighten the studs to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the transmission fluid level indicator tube (2) to the AIR solenoid valve stud (3).
  6.  
  7. Install the nut (1) securing the transmission fluid level indicator tube (2) to the AIR solenoid valve and tighten the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the AIR pump air outlet pipe to the AIR solenoid valve.
  10.  
  11. Connect the electrical connector to the AIR solenoid valve.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  14.  

Testing

  1. Apply fused battery voltage and ground to the solenoid valve.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the valve opens and closes completely as voltage is applied to and removed from the solenoid.
  4.  
  5. Observe that the valve is not obstructed or leaking.
  6.  
  7. If the valve operates incorrectly, leaks, or is obstructed, remove the obstruction or replace the valve.
  8.  
  9. Verify the solenoid valve operation as follows:
    1. With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, observe that the AIR pump is not operating.
    2.  
    3. With the engine running, enable the AIR solenoid with a scan tool and observe that the AIR Pressure Sensor parameter equals approximately 8-10 kPa above BARO.
    4.  
    5. With the engine running, enable the AIR pump with a scan tool and observe that the AIR Pressure Sensor parameter equals approximately 20-25 kPa above BARO.
