Crankshaft Front Seal

Removal & Installation



4.2L Engine

NOTE
Do not damage the engine front cover or the crankshaft.

  1. Remove the crankshaft damper (balancer).
  2.  
  3. Pry out the crankshaft front oil seal using a suitable tool. Use the provided slots for prying out the seal.
  4.

  1. Apply the engine oil to the outside diameter of the crankshaft front oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Use the special tool J44218 to install the front oil seal. Remove the J44218.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft damper.
  6.  

5.3L & 6.0L Engines
  1. Remove the radiator.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft damper (balancer).
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft oil seal (1) from the front cover.
  6.

NOTE
Do not lubricate the oil seal sealing surface. Do not reuse the crankshaft oil seal.

  1. Lubricate the outer edge of the oil seal (1) with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the front cover oil seal bore with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft front oil seal onto the J41478 guide.
  6.  
  7. Install J41478 threaded rod with nut, washer, guide, and oil seal into the end of the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Use J41478 in order to install the oil seal into the cover bore.
    1. Use a wrench and hold the hex on the installer bolt.
    2.  
    3. Use a second wrench and rotate the installer nut clockwise until the seal bottoms in the cover bore.
    4.  
    5. Remove J41478.
    6.  
    7. Inspect the oil seal for proper installation.
    8.

  11. The oil seal should be installed evenly and completely into the front cover bore.
  12.  
  13. Install the crankshaft damper.
  14.  
  15. Install the radiator.
