Multi-Function (Combination) Switch

Removal & Installataion



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the airbag system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower trim covers.
    NOTE
    The abrasion sleeve located on the steering column wire harness assembly must be reinstalled. Make note of what connector is coming out of the abrasion sleeve for installation purposes.

  6.  
  7. Remove the wire harness assembly from the wire harness strap.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly connector from the SIR system coil connector.
  10.  
  11. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly out of the bulkhead connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly from the steering column tilt head assembly.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly onto the steering column tilt head assembly.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly rests on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

  3. Screw the 2 pan head tapping screws into the turn signal and multifunction assembly.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the top pan head tapping screw to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm). Tighten the side pan head tapping screw to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly into the bulkhead connector.
  8.  
  9. Connect the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly connector to the SIR coil connector.
    NOTE
    The abrasion sleeve must be installed back onto the steering column wire harness assembly. The ignition lock cylinder case wires and connector must be hanging out of the middle of the abrasion sleeve.

  10.  
  11. Install the wire harness assembly into the wire harness strap.
  12.  
  13. Install the upper and lower trim covers.
  14.  
  15. Enable the airbag system.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  


CAUTION
These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in the Chassis Electrical Section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the OFF (center) position.

  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two pan head tapping screws from the lower steering column cover, then tilt the cover down and slide it back to disengage the locking tabs.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower steering column cover.
  10.  
  11. Using a Torx® screwdriver, remove the two Torx head screws from the upper steering column cover, then remove the cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wire harness strap, then remove the two harness straps from the steering column wire harness.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screw and disengage the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wiring harness.
  16.  
  17. Unplug the gray and black connectors of the switch from the steering column bulkhead connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the two pan head tapping screws.
  20.  
  21. Grasp the lever/multi-function turn signal switch assembly, then remove it by carefully pulling it straight outward.

To install:

  1. Install the lever/multi-function turn signal switch assembly, using a small blade screwdriver to compress the electrical contact and move the assembly into position.
    NOTE
    The electrical contact MUST rest on the canceling cam assembly.

  3. Connect the two pan head tapping screws, then tighten the screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the gray and black connectors of the switch to the column bulkhead connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wiring harness.
  8.  
  9. Connect the two wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness, then install the wire harness strap.
  10.  
  11. Install the upper steering column cover, then using a Torx® screwdriver, connect the two Torx head screws to the upper column cover, tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower steering column cover, then connect using the two pan head tapping screws, tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Make sure that the lever is in the OFF (center) position.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering wheel.
  18.  
  19. If equipped, install the horn pad.
  20.  
  21. Activate the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.
