Inspection & Testing

5.3L & 6.0L Engines

Spark plug wire integrity is vital for proper engine operation. A thorough inspection is necessary to accurately identify conditions that may affect engine operation. Inspect for the following condition

  1. Correct routing of the spark plug wires - Incorrect routing may cause cross-firing.
  2.
  3. Any signs of cracks or splits in the wires.
  4.
  5. Inspect each boot for the following conditions:

    Tearing

    Piercing

    Arcing

    Carbon tracking

    Corroded terminal

  6.

If corrosion, carbon tracking or arcing are indicated on a spark plug wire boot or terminal, replace the wire and the component connected to the wire.

Removal & Installation

5.3L & 6.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and if the vehicle has been run recently, allow the engine to thoroughly cool.
  2.
  3. Remove the intake manifold sight shield, if necessary.
  4.
  5. Remove the spark plug wire by carefully twisting the spark plug wire boot to loosen it, then remove the boot from the plug. Be sure to pull on the boot and not on the wire, otherwise the connector located inside the boot may become separated.
  6.
  7. Remove the spark plug wire from the ignition coil in the same manner as from the spark plug.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install the spark plug wire to the ignition coil.
  2.
  3. Install the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
  4.
  5. Inspect the wires for proper installation.
  6.
  7. Install the intake manifold sight shield, if necessary.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
