Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the battery tray.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shift control cable bracket.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the input speed sensor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the transaxle range switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wire harness from the transaxle range switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut securing the battery negative cable and wire harness ground to the transaxle stud.
  12.  
  13. Remove the battery negative cable and wire harness ground from the transaxle stud.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the electrical connector from the output speed sensor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut and fuel line retaining clip from the transaxle.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the transaxle vent tube.
  20.  
  21. Secure the wire harness, vent hose, and shift cable up away from the transaxle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the upper 4 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  24.  
  25. Tie the radiator, air conditioning condenser and fan module assembly to the upper radiator support to keep the assembly with the vehicle when the frame and drivetrain are removed.
  26.  
  27. Install the engine support fixture. See the procedure as described under Front Cover Removal & Installation.
  28.  
  29. Remove the left hand transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left hand transaxle mount-to-side rail bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the left hand transaxle mount from the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Raise and support the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove both front wheels.
  38.  
  39. Remove the left and right side engine splash shields.
  40.  
  41. Remove the steering intermediate shaft pinch bolt and discard the bolt.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  44.  
  45. Remove the right and left outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  46.  
  47. Remove the right and left stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft.
  48.  
  49. Remove the right and left lower ball joints from the steering knuckles.
  50.  
  51. Remove the front bumper fascia air deflector.
  52.  
  53. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  54.  
  55. Remove the transaxle oil cooler lines from the transaxle.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the J 45201, or equivalent is fully seated into the transaxle seal bore.

  57. Insert the collet piece of tool J 45201 into the cooler line seal.
  58.  
  59. Insert the forcing screw piece of the J 45201 into the collet.
  60.  
  61. Tighten the forcing screw until snug.
  62.  
  63. Thread the collar piece of J 45201 onto the collet until snug.
  64.  
  65. Turn the collar clockwise in order to remove the cooler line seal.
  66.  
  67. Discard the seal.
  68.  
  69. Clean the case bores for the cooler line seals.
  70.  
  71. Remove the engine-to-transaxle brace bolts and brace.
  72.  
  73. Remove the starter motor.
  74.  
  75. Turn the crankshaft balancer bolt clockwise to gain access to the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts through the starter motor hole.
    NOTE
    Mark the relation of the flywheel to torque converter for reassembly.

  77. Remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts.
  78.  
  79. Remove the front engine mount.
  80.  
  81. Remove the through bolt from the rear transaxle mount and bracket.
  82.  
  83. Place a universal frame support fixture under the frame.
  84.  
  85. Lower the vehicle until the frame contacts the frame support fixture.
  86.  
  87. Remove the frame-to-body bolts. Discard the bolts.
  88.  
  89. Raise the vehicle up away from the frame and remove the frame from under the vehicle.
  90.  
  91. Disconnect the right and left halfshafts from the intermediate shaft and transaxle. Secure both out of the way.
  92.  
  93. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  94.  
  95. If vehicle is equipped with all wheel drive (AWD) complete the following steps:
    1. Remove the rear driveshaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the transfer case mounting bracket.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the vent hose from the top of the transfer case.
    6.

  97. Support the transaxle with a suitable transaxle jack.
  98.  
  99. Remove the 4 lower transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  100.  
  101. Slide the transaxle away from the engine until the transaxle torque-converter clears the flywheel.
  102.  
  103. If equipped with a drive axle seal dust cover, discard it and do not replace it.
  104.  
  105. Lower the transaxle away from the vehicle.
  106.  
  107. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD complete the following steps:
    1. Remove the retaining ring from the stub shaft for tool installation. Discard the retainer ring.
    2.  
    3. Remove the stub shaft from the transfer case using a slide hammer and adapter.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the transfer case from the transaxle.
    8.

  109. If the vehicle is equipped with front wheel drive (FWD) complete the following steps:
    1. Remove the bolts securing the rear transaxle mount bracket to the transaxle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the rear transaxle mount bracket from the transaxle.
    4.

To install:

  1. If the vehicle is equipped with FWD complete the following steps:
    1. Install the rear transaxle mount bracket to the transaxle.
    2.  
    3. Install the bolts securing the rear transaxle mount bracket to the transaxle. Tighten the bolts to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
    4.

  3. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD complete the following steps:
    1. Install the transfer case to the transaxle.
    2.  
    3. Install the bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle. Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
    4.  
    5. Install the stub shaft.
    6.  
    7. Install a NEW retaining ring on the stub shaft
    8.

  5. Raise the transaxle up into the vehicle engine compartment.
  6.  
  7. Align and install the transaxle to the engine.
  8.  
  9. Install the 4 lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. If the vehicle is equipped with AWD complete the following steps:
    1. Connect the vent hose to the top of the transfer case.
    2.  
    3. Install the transfer case mounting bracket.
    4.  
    5. Install the rear driveshaft.
    6.

  13. Install the intermediate shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the right and left halfshafts to the intermediate shaft and transaxle.
  16.  
  17. Install the frame to the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install NEW frame-to-body bolts. Tighten the bolts to 155 Nm (114 ft. lbs.).
  20.  
  21. Install the bolt through the rear transaxle mount and transaxle mount bracket. Tighten the bolt to 110 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).
  22.  
  23. Install the front engine mount. Torque the mount-to-frame bolt to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.). Torque the mount-to-transmission bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

  25. Turn the crankshaft balancer bolt clockwise to gain access to the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts through the starter motor hole.
    NOTE
    Align the reference marks on the flywheel and torque converter.

  27. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Tighten the bolt to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).

  29. Install the starter motor.
  30.  
  31. Install the engine-to-transaxle brace.
  32.  
  33. Install the engine-to-transaxle brace bolts. Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs).

  35. Insert a new transaxle cooler line seal into the case bore.
  36.  
  37. Remove the nub from tool J 41239-1.
  38.  
  39. Install the nub of tool J 41239-1 on the transaxle cooler line seal.
  40.  
  41. Tap the new transaxle cooler line seal into the case bore.
  42.  
  43. Install the transaxle oil cooler line assembly to the transaxle.
  44.  
  45. Install the transaxle oil cooler line assembly nut. Tighten the transaxle cooler line retaining nut to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
  46.  
  47. Install the front bumper fascia air deflector.
  48.  
  49. Install the right and left lower ball joints to the steering knuckles.
  50.  
  51. Install the right and left stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft.
  52.  
  53. Install the right and left outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  54.  
  55. Connect the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
  56.  
  57. Install a NEW pinch bolt to the steering intermediate shaft. Tighten the bolt to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
  58.  
  59. Install the right and left side engine splash shields.
  60.  
  61. Install both front wheels.
  62.  
  63. Lower the vehicle.
  64.  
  65. Install the left hand transaxle mount to the vehicle.
  66.  
  67. Install the left hand transaxle mount-to-side rail bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
  68.  
  69. Install the left hand transaxle mount to transaxle bolts. Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
  70.  
  71. Remove the engine support fixture.
  72.  
  73. Untie the radiator, air conditioning condenser and fan module assembly from the upper radiator support .
  74.  
  75. Install the upper 4 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
  76.  
  77. Connect the transaxle vent tube.
  78.  
  79. Connect the electrical connector to the output speed sensor.
  80.  
  81. Install the nut and fuel line retaining clip to the transaxle. Tighten the nut to 25 Nm (18 inch lbs.).
  82.  
  83. Install the battery negative cable and wire harness ground to the transaxle stud.
  84.  
  85. Install the nut securing the battery negative cable and wire harness ground to the transaxle stud. Tighten the nut to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
  86.  
  87. Connect the electrical connectors to the transaxle range switch.
  88.  
  89. Connect the electrical connector from the input speed sensor.
  90.  
  91. Install the shift control cable bracket.
  92.  
  93. Install the battery tray.
  94.  
  95. Fill the transaxle with fluid to the correct level.
  96.  
  97. Perform the transmission adaptive learn procedure.
