Bearing Replacement



  1. Select the expander assembly and driving washer from the camshaft bearing service set.

  3. Assemble tool J 33049, or equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Drive out the camshaft bearings using tool J 33049.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Assemble Special Tool J 33049 according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    WARNING
    Severe engine damage may result if the oil holes are not correctly aligned.

  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft bearings in the following order:
  4.  
  5. Index the camshaft bearing oil holes with the engine block oil passages.
  6.  
  7. Place the bearing on the tool.
  8.  
  9. Install the third camshaft bearing.
  10.  
  11. Install the second camshaft bearing.
  12.  
  13. Install the outer camshaft bearings.
  14.  
  15. Apply sealer GM P/N United States 12377901, GM P/N Canada 10953504 or the equivalent to the camshaft rear bearing hole plug.

  17. Install the camshaft rear bearing hole plug.
  18.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cylinder heads.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lifter guide bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lifter guide.
    NOTE
    Place the valve lifters in an organized order to ensure that they are installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  8.  
  9. Remove the lifters.

  11. Remove the oil pan.

  13. Remove the camshaft position sensor bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft position sensor.

  17. Remove the camshaft thrust plate screws.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.
    NOTE
    All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  21. Complete the following steps in order to remove the camshaft.
    1. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt into the camshaft. Tighten finger tight only.
    2.  
    3. Carefully rotate and remove the camshaft from the engine block.
    4.

To install:

  1. Coat the camshaft journals with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Coat the camshaft lobes with prelube GM P/N 12345501 (Canadian P/N 992704) or the equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft using the following procedure:
    1. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt into the camshaft. Tighten finger tight only.
    2.  
    3. Carefully rotate the camshaft while installing the camshaft into the camshaft bearings.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft thrust plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft thrust plate screws. Tighten the camshaft thrust plate screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  12.  
  13. Install the camshaft position sensor bolt. Tighten the camshaft position sensor bolt to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Coat the valve lifters using prelube GM P/N 1052367 (Canadian P/N 992869) or the equivalent.
  18.  
  19. Install the valve lifters in their original locations.
  20.  
  21. Install the lifter guide.
  22.  
  23. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or the equivalent to the lifter guide bolt threads and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
  24.  
  25. Install the cylinder heads.
  26.  
  27. Install the engine assembly into the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks.
