Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Turn the front wheels to the full right position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheels.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the stabilizer bar.

  9. Remove the left outer tie rod to steering knuckle nut. Discard the nut.
  10.  
  11. Separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer bar clamp to cradle bolts.

  15. Remove the stabilizer bar clamps and bushings from the stabilizer bar.
    NOTE
    Take care not to catch the transmission shift cable or left wheel house plastic trim when removing the stabilizer bar.

  17. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle through the left wheel opening.
  18.  

To install:


NOTE
Take care not to catch the transmission shift cable or left wheel house plastic trim when installing the stabilizer bar.

  1. Install the stabilizer bar to the vehicle through the left wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer bar clamps and bushings to the stabilizer bar.
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer bar clamp bolts. Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
  6.  
  7. Inspect the stabilizer link boots for damage and replace the stabilizer link if needed.
    NOTE
    Hold the ball stud when tightening the nut.

  8.  
  9. Connect the stabilizer links to the stabilizer bar. Do not allow the boot to twist. Tighten the bar to link nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the left outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.

  13. Use tool J 44015 to seat the ball stud taper to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install a new tie rod retention nut. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the front tire and wheels.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  

  1. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer shaft links. Use the proper size Allen wrench to keep the stabilizer link ball stud from rotating while removing the nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gear assembly. It is not necessary to completely remove the outer tie rod end from the steering rack. Relocate the outer tie rod end to the side and support if necessary.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the left and right steering knuckle all the way forward.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer shaft clamp to cradle bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stabilizer shaft clamps and bushings from the stabilizer bar.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.
  18.  
  19. Using a jack stand, raise the front of the catalytic converter until just touches the floor panel
  20.  
  21. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle through the left wheel opening. It may be necessary to rotate the stabilizer shaft 180° while removing it from the vehicle.
    WARNING
    Take care not to catch the transmission shift cable or left wheel house plastic trim when removing the stabilizer bar.

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft to the vehicle through the left wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer shaft clamps and bushings to the stabilizer bar and tighten the clamp mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the stabilizer shaft links. Tighten the nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the steering gear assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the jack stand from the catalytic converter and install the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Install the front wheels.
  12.
