Parking Brake Shoes

For vehicles equipped with drum brakes, the rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

Adjustment



  1. Apply and fully release the park brake lever.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the park brake lever releases completely.
  4.  
  5. Turn ON the ignition. Verify that the red BRAKE warning indicator lamp is off.
  6.  
  7. Turn OFF the ignition.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear wheel.
    WARNING
    Do not operate the park brake lever with the rear disc brake rotors removed.

  13. Remove the rear disc brake rotors.
  14.  
  15. Place the inside measurement contacts of the Special Tool J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge at the widest point of the drum portion of the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the set screw on the tool in order to ensure the proper measurement when removing the tool from the drum.
  18.  
  19. Position the outside measurement contacts of Special Tool J 21177-A over the park brake shoe at the widest point.
    WARNING
    If the gap between the adjuster nut and the adjuster screw exceeds 5 mm (0.25 in) during the adjustment procedure, the park brake shoe must be replaced.

  21. Adjust the park brake shoe-to-drum clearance by rotating the adjustment nut on the park brake actuator. Clearance should be 0.015 in (0.38 mm).

  23. Install the rear brake rotors.
  24.  
  25. Install the rear wheel.
  26.  
  27. Apply the park brake lever. Inspect the rotation of the rear wheels:

    The wheels should not rotate forward.
     
    The wheels should drag or not rotate rearward.

  29. If the rear tire and wheel assemblies rotate forward or do not exhibit drag rearward, proceed to the park brake cable adjustment.
  30.  
  31. Release the park brake lever. Verify that the wheels rotate freely.
  32.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear brake rotor.
  6.  
  7. Compress the parking brake shoe hold spring and rotate 1 / 4 turn to release.
  8.  
  9. Using a Brake Spring Remover, remove the parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the parking brake shoe adjuster screw.
  12.  
  13. Using a Brake Spring Remover, remove the parking brake shoe return spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the parking brake shoes.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the parking brake shoes.
