Overhaul
Inner Joint
  1. Position halfshaft bar in a soft jawed vise and clamp securely.
  2.  
  3. Using side cutters, remove and discard the small seal clamp.
  4.  
  5. Remove large seal retaining clamp using a flat-bladed tool and discard the clamp.
  6.  
  7. Separate the seal from the tripot housing at the large diameter and slide the seal away from the joint along the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Wipe the excess grease from the face of the tripot spider and the inside of the tripot housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tripot housing from the spider and shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining ring from the groove on the halfshaft bar and remove the spider assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the seal from the halfshaft bar.
  16.  
  17. Thoroughly clean all parts with a suitable solvent, removing all traces of grease and contaminants.
  18.  
  19. Dry all parts with compressed air.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the tripot joint components for unusual wear, cracks, and other damage. Replace any damaged components.
  22.  

To assemble:

  1. Install the small seal clamp to the seal. Do not crimp the clamp.
  2.  
  3. Slide the inner seal onto the halfshaft bar and locate the lip of the seal groove on the halfshaft bar.
    NOTE
    Ensure the seal clamp is positioned correctly in the seal groove.

  4.  
  5. Using a crimping tool, crimp the small seal clamp.

  7. Measure the clamp gap width. Clamp gap width should not exceed 2.15 mm (0.85 in.).

  9. Install the tripot spider assembly to the halfshaft bar, until seated against shoulder.

  11. Install the retaining ring in the groove of the halfshaft bar with suitable pliers.
  12.  
  13. Place approximately half of the grease in the kit to the seal and place the remainder in the tripot housing.
  14.  
  15. Install the large clamp over the large diameter of the seal.
  16.  
  17. Install the tripot housing to the tripot spider assembly on the halfshaft bar.
  18.  
  19. Slide the large diameter of the seal over the outside of the tripot housing and position the lip of the seal in the housing groove.
  20.  
  21. Place the large seal retaining clamp around the seal and close using the tool.
  22.  
  23. Inspect the gap dimension on the clamp ear. Continue tightening until the gap dimension is reached. Gap should be 1.9 mm ( 5 / 64  in).
  24.  
  25. Rotate the housing in a circular motion to distribute the grease in the tripot joint.
  26.  

Outer Joint
  1. Clamp the drive axle shaft in a soft jawed vice.
  2.  
  3. Use a flat-bladed tool and disengage the retaining tabs of the large seal clamp.
  4.  
  5. Discard the clamp.
  6.  
  7. Remove the small seal clamp using side cutters and discard the clamp.
  8.  
  9. Separate the constant velocity (CV) joint boot from the CV joint race at the large diameter.
  10.  
  11. Slide the boot away from the joint along the halfshaft bar.
  12.  
  13. Wipe the excess grease from the face of the CV inner race.
  14.  
  15. Place a block of wood against the CV joint outer race and carefully tap on the CV joint to remove it from the halfshaft bar.
  16.  
  17. Remove the seal from the halfshaft bar.
  18.  
  19. Remove the CV joint retaining ring from the halfshaft bar.
  20.  
  21. Place a brass drift against the CV joint inner race.
  22.  
  23. Tap gently on the brass drift with a hammer in order to tilt the joint race.
  24.  
  25. Remove the first bearing roller when the CV race tilts.
  26.  
  27. Tilt the CV joint inner race in the opposite direction to remove the opposing bearing roller.

  29. Repeat the process to remove all 6 of the bearing rollers.
  30.  
  31. Pivot the CV joint cage and the inner race 90 degrees to the centerline of the outer race. At the same time, align the cage windows with the lands of the outer race.

  33. Lift out the cage and the inner race.
  34.  
  35. Remove the inner race from the cage by rotating the inner race upward.
  36.  
  37. Clean the all items thoroughly with a suitable solvent. Remove all traces of grease and contaminants.
  38.  
  39. Dry all the parts with compressed air.
  40.  
  41. Inspect the CV joint assembly for wear, cracks or damage.
  42.  
  43. Replace any damaged parts.
  44.  
  45. Clean the halfshaft bar. Use a wire brush to remove any rust in the seal mounting grooves.
  46.  

To assemble:

  1. Install the new small seal clamp on the neck of the outboard seal. Do not clamp.
  2.  
  3. Slide the outboard seal onto the halfshaft bar and position the neck of the outboard seal in the seal groove on the bar. The largest groove below the sight groove on the halfshaft bar is the seal groove seal.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the seal clamp is properly positioned around the entire circumference of the seal.

  4.  
  5. Crimp the seal clamp using a crimping tool.
  6.  
  7. Measure the clamp end gap dimension. The gap should not exceed 2.15 mm (0.85 in).
  8.  
  9. Put a light coat of grease from the service kit on the bearing roller grooves of the inner race and outer race.
  10.  
  11. Hold the inner race 90 degrees to centerline of cage with the lands of the inner race aligned with the windows of the cage and insert the inner race into the cage.
  12.  
  13. Hold the cage and inner race 90 degrees to the center line of the outer race and align the cage windows with the lands of the outer race.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the retaining ring side of the inner race faces the halfshaft bar.

  14.  
  15. Place the cage and the inner race into the outer race.
  16.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the halfshaft spindle nut.
  6.  
  7. While holding the stabilizer link with a wrench, remove the stabilizer link-to-lower control arm nut.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the link from the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Place a stand under the lower control arm and support the control arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove the toe link nut, bolt, and washer.
  16.  
  17. Loosen, but do not remove, the lower suspension jounce bumper nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower control arm-to-suspension knuckle bolt and nut.
    NOTE
    Relieve spring tension slowly in order to avoid sudden release of the coil spring.

  20.  
  21. Slowly lower support stand until coil spring tension is relieved and remove coil spring.
  22.  
  23. Loosen, but do not remove, the upper control arm-to-suspension knuckle nut.
    NOTE
    Support the halfshaft while it is disengaged from the wheel hub and bearing assembly in order to avoid damaging the halfshaft seals.

  25. Place a block of wood against the halfshaft spindle and tap with a hammer to release the spindle from the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  26.  
  27. Rotate the suspension knuckle upward and secure with heavy mechanics wire, or equivalent.
  28.  
  29. Assemble tools J 45341 and J-2619-A to the halfshaft inner tripot joint.

  31. Disengage the tripot joint from the rear drive module (RDM).
  32.  
  33. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Remove and discard the halfshaft retaining ring.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Install a new halfshaft retaining ring to the inner tripot joint.
  2.  
  3. Install tool J 44394, or equivalent to the halfshaft oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Align the splines of the inner tripot joint to the output shaft of the RDM.
  6.  
  7. Install the halfshaft to the output shaft:
    1. Guide the halfshaft tripot joint squarely onto the output shaft.
    2.  
    3. After the splined end of the halfshaft passes the oil seal, remove the tool from the oil seal.
    4.  
    5. Firmly engage the halfshaft to the output shaft.
    6.  
    7. Ensure that the tripot joint is fully seated on the output shaft by grasping the tripot joint and attempting to pull free of the output shaft.
    8.  
    9. Ensure that the tripot slinger does not become damaged.
    10.

  9. Rotate the suspension knuckle downward while simultaneously guiding the constant velocity (CV) joint spindle to the wheel hub and bearing assembly of the suspension knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Hand install a new halfshaft spindle nut.

  15. Secure each of the insulators to the coil spring using 2 plastic tie straps positioned 180 degrees apart and through the reliefs molded into the insulators. Cut off any excess length of the tie straps.
  16.  
  17. Position the coil spring assembly to the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Position a support stand under the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Carefully raise the lower control arm while simultaneously guiding the coil spring assembly into the rear suspension cradle.
  22.  
  23. Position the suspension knuckle to the lower control arm.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the hex head of the suspension knuckle bolt faces the rear of the vehicle.

  24.  
  25. Install the lower control arm-to-suspension knuckle bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.).
  26.  
  27. Tighten the upper control arm-to-suspension knuckle bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
  28.  
  29. Install the lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
  30.  
  31. Slowly lower and remove the support stand.
  32.  
  33. Tighten the lower jounce bumper nut. Tighten the nut to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
  34.  
  35. Position the rear toe link to the suspension knuckle.
  36.  
  37. Install the washer, bolt, and nut to the suspension knuckle and the toe link assembly. Tighten the bolt and nut to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
  38.  
  39. Position the stabilizer bar link to the lower control arm.
  40.  
  41. Install the nut to the stabilizer bar link.
  42.  
  43. While holding the stabilizer bar link stationary with a wrench, tighten the nut. Tighten the nut to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
  44.  
  45. Tighten the halfshaft spindle nut. Tighten the nut to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
  46.  
  47. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  48.  
  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50.  

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Insert a drift or punch into the rotor, against the brake caliper bracket. Using a suitable tool, loosen the wheel halfshaft spindle nut and discard.

  7. Using Special Tool J-42129, or suitable wheel hub removal tool, disengage the halfshaft from the wheel hub.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear brake caliper. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Rear Disc Brakes, Brake Caliper, Removal & Installation.-
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Rear Suspension, Wheel Bearings, Removal & Installation.-
  12.  
  13. Remove the control arm-to-knuckle mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the toe link-to-knuckle bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the three trailing arm-to-knuckle bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear suspension knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Using a suitable pry tool, carefully release the halfshaft from the rear drive module (RDM).
    NOTE
    Because of the design of the halfshaft seal, the output seal will come out with the halfshaft when removed.


    WARNING
    Do not re-use the inner halfshaft seal. The seal must be replaced.

To install:

  1. Replace the retaining clip on the tripod joint.
  2.  
  3. Install a new halfshaft seal. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Rear Drive Axle, Axleshaft, Bearing & Seal, Removal & Installation.-
    NOTE
    When installing the wheel drive shaft, you will notice a slight resistance. This is the wheel drive shaft seal. A snap or click should be heard when the wheel drive shaft is fully seated.

  5. Install the halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear suspension knuckle. Install all of the bolts loosely at first. Then tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Tighten the knuckle-to-lower control arm bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the knuckle-to-upper control arm bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the knuckle-to-toe link bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the three trailing arm-to-knuckle bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
    8.  

  8.  
  9. Install the bearing/hub assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake caliper assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the a new halfshaft spindle nut. Hand tighten at this time.
  14.  
  15. Insert a drift or punch into the rotor, against the brake caliper bracket. Tighten the wheel halfshaft spindle nut to 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the tire/wheel assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.
