Transfer Case Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transfer case fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right wheel halfshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retainer ring from the stub shaft for tool installation. Discard the used retainer ring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stub shaft using a slide hammer and adapter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transfer case mounting bracket.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transfer case vent hose.
  18.  
  19. Support the transaxle with a jackstand.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 4 bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle.
    NOTE
    Remove the rear transaxle mount from the transfer case after the transfer case has been removed from the vehicle.

  23. Remove the 3 bolts securing the rear transaxle mount to the vehicle frame.
  24.  
  25. Slide the transfer case away from the transaxle.
  26.  
  27. Rotate the transfer case so that the driveshaft drive flange faces the transaxle.
  28.  
  29. Lift and rotate the transfer case so that the driveshaft drive flange is pointing down toward the floor.
  30.  
  31. Lower the transfer case through the opening between the engine oil pan and the vehicle frame.
  32.  
  33. Remove the 3 bolts and rear transaxle mount from the transfer case.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear transaxle mount to the transfer case.
  2.  
  3. Install the 3 bolts securing the rear transaxle mount to the transfer case. Tighten the bolts to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
  4.  
  5. Ensure the torque converter cover is in the proper location.
  6.  
  7. With the transfer case driveshaft drive flange pointing down toward the floor, lift the transfer case up between the engine oil pan and the vehicle frame.
  8.  
  9. Rotate and align the transfer case with the transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Install the 4 bolts securing the transfer case to the transaxle. Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
  12.  
  13. Install the 3 bolts securing the rear transaxle mount to the vehicle frame. Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
  14.  
  15. Remove the jackstand supporting the transaxle.
  16.  
  17. Connect the transfer case vent hose.
  18.  
  19. Install the transfer case mounting bracket. Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
  20.  
  21. Install the stub shaft.
  22.  
  23. Install a NEW retainer ring on the stub shaft.
  24.  
  25. Install the intermediate shaft.
  26.  
  27. Install the right wheel halfshaft.
  28.  
  29. Fill the transfer case with fluid.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
