Parking Brake Shoes

For vehicles with rear disc brakes the parking brake uses a drum-in-hat style parking brake. For vehicles with rear drum brakes the brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes for servicing information.

Adjustment



  1. Set the J 21177-A so that the J 21177-A contacts the inside diameter of the rotor.

  3. Position the J 21177-A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point.
  4.  
  5. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts the J 21177-A.

  7. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the opposite side.
  8.  
  9. The clearance between the park brake shoe and the rotor is 0.026 inch (0.66 mm).
  10.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable from the backing plate:
    1. Compress the spring by pushing toward the lever.
    2.  
    3. Depress the locking tabs.
    4.  
    5. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cable through the slot in the backing plate.

  9. Remove the park brake cable from the lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the park brake shoe return spring.

  17. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  18.  
  19. Separate the tips of the shoes from the park brake actuator and remove the park brake shoes and adjuster assembly from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
  2.  
  3. Install the adjuster assembly to the park brake shoes.
  4.  
  5. Separate the tips of the shoes and install the park brake shoes to the park brake actuator.
  6.  
  7. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  8.  
  9. Install the park brake shoe return spring.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable to the lever.
  18.  
  19. Perform the following procedure to install the cable to the backing plate:
    1. Compress the spring by pushing towards the lever.
    2.  
    3. Route the cable through the slot in the backing plate.
    4.  
    5. Push the cable housing into the backing plate until the locking tabs snap into place.
    6.  

  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the safety stands.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  28.  
  29. Adjust the park brake cable.
  30.  

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the tension on the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable from the lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Turn the adjustment screw to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut.

  15. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the backing plate by removing the tips from the slots and sliding the shoe towards the retaining spring until the shoe is disengaged from the spring.

  17. Remove the park brake shoe assembly from the vehicle by placing one of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it has cleared the flange.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean towel.
  2.  
  3. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.
  4.  
  5. Install the park brake shoe assembly to the vehicle by placing on of the open ends of the shoe over the axle flange and rotating the shoe until it is behind the flange.
  6.  
  7. Position the park brake shoe on the inboard side of the actuation.
  8.  
  9. Slide the parking brake shoe into position and seat into the retaining spring.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate with both tips located in the slots.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  14.  
  15. Install the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer.
    1. Tighten the nut to 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm).
    2.  

  20.  
  21. Install the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the safety stands.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Adjust parking brake cable
