    Wheel Speed Sensors

    NOTE
    These vehicles use three speed sensors. Each front wheel has a speed sensor mounted to the wheel hub and the signal for the rear wheel comes from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted to the transmission tail housing (2WD) or to the transfer case (4WD).

    Removal & Installation




    CAUTION
    Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

    1. Position the vehicle on a hoist and raise the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the output speed sensor stud.
    6.  
    7. Remove the output speed sensor from the transaxle case.
      NOTE
      Inspect the O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

    8.  
    9. Remove the O-ring from the output speed sensor.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Install the O-ring onto the output speed sensor.
    2.  
    3. Install the output speed sensor into the transaxle case.
    4.  
    5. Install the output speed sensor stud, and tighten the speed sensor stud to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Connect the electrical connector.
    8.  
    9. Lower the vehicle.
    10.  

    1. Raise the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake caliper.
    6.  
    7. Remove the hub and rotor.
    8.  
    9. Remove the wheel speed sensor cable electrical connector.
    10.  
    11. Remove the wheel speed sensor cable mounting clips from the frame attachment points.
    12.  
    13. Remove the wheel speed sensor mounting bolts (8) and nuts (15).
    14.  
    15. Remove the two 11 mm splash shield mounting bolts.
    16.  
    17. Remove the wheel speed sensor and splash shield assembly (10).
    18.  
    19. Remove the splash shield gasket.
    20.  
    21. Clean the gasket and knuckle (12) surfaces thoroughly using a dry cloth.

    To install:

    1. Install the splash shield gasket.
    2.  
    3. Install the wheel speed sensor splash shield.
    4.  
    5. Install the two 11 mm splash shield mounting bolts.
      1. Tighten the splash shield mounting bolts to 142 inch lbs. (16 Nm).
      2.  
      3. Tighten the speed sensor mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
      4.  

    6.  
    7. Install the harness clips, fastening bolts and the nuts to the frame attachment points.
    8.  
    9. Install the hub and rotor.
    10.  
    11. Install the brake caliper.
    12.  
    13. Install the tire and wheel.
    14.  

    1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake rotor (2) (1500 series shown).

    7. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the upper control arm.
    10.  
    11. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the frame attachment point.
    12.  
    13. Remove the WSS cable electrical connector.
    14.  
    15. Remove the wheel speed sensor (WSS) mounting bolt.
      WARNING
      Carefully remove the sensor by pulling it straight out of the bore. DO NOT use a screwdriver, or other device to pry the sensor out of the bore. Prying will cause the sensor body to break off in the bore.

    17. Remove the wheel speed sensor (5) from the hub/bearing assembly (4) shown on the 2500/3500 series.

    To install:

    1. Plug the WSS bore to prevent debris from falling into the hub.
    2.  
    3. Using a wire brush or equivalent, clean the WSS mounting surface on the hub to remove any rust or corrosion.
    4.  
    5. Apply a thin layer of wheel bearing lubricant to the hub surface and the sensor O-ring prior to sensor installation.
    6.  
    7. Install the WSS (5) into the hub/bearing assembly (4). Ensure that the sensor is seated flat against the hub.
    8.  
    9. Install the WSS mounting bolt.
      1. Tighten the WSS mounting bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
      2.  

    10.  
    11. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the knuckle.
    12.  
    13. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the upper control arm.
    14.  
    15. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the frame attachment point.
    16.  
    17. Connect the WSS cable electrical connector.
    18.  
    19. Install the brake rotor.
    20.  
    21. Install the tire and wheel.
    22.  
    23. Using a scan tool, perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS
    24.  

    1. Disconnect the speed sensor connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the vehicle speed sensor bolt(s).
    4.  
    5. Remove the vehicle speed sensor using tool J38417 or equivalent. Have a suitable container in order to catch the fluid.
    6.  
    7. Remove the O-ring seal.
    8.  
    9. Inspect the vehicle speed sensor assemblies for any evidence of damage.

    To install:

    1. Install the new speed sensor and O-ring seal using tool J38417 or equivalent.
    2.  
    3. Coat the seal with a thin film of transmission fluid.
    4.  
    5. Install the bolt and tighten to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the harness connector.
    8.  
    9. Refill the fluid as required.
    10.  

    1. Raise the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the wheel speed sensor retaining bolt.
    6.  
    7. Remove the wheel speed sensor.

    To install:

    1. Using a twisting motion, install the wheel speed sensor until fully seated.
    2.  
    3. Install the wheel speed sensor retaining bolt and tighten to 115 in. lbs (13 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Lower the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Perform a low speed test to ensure the wheel speed sensor is functioning properly:

      Start the engine and allow it to idle.
       
      Verify the ABS indicator or the traction assist indicator remains illuminated.
       
      If the ABS indicator or the traction assist indicator remains illuminated, DO NOT proceed to drive the vehicle until it is diagnosed and repaired. Check the wheel speed sensor electrical connector to ensure it is not damaged and is installed properly.
       
      Select a smooth, dry, clean, and level road or large lot that is as free of traffic and obstacles as possible.
       
      Drive the vehicle and maintain a speed of at least 16 km/h (10 mph) for at least 5 seconds.
       
      Stop the vehicle and check to see if the ABS indicator or the traction assist indicator is illuminated.

    The rear wheel speed input signal originates at the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located in the tailshaft of the transmission (2-wheel drive) or transfer case (4-wheel drive).

    2-Wheel Drive
    1. Raise the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake caliper.
    6.  
    7. Remove the hub and rotor.
    8.  
    9. Remove the wheel speed sensor cable electrical connector.
    10.  
    11. Remove the wheel speed sensor cable mounting clips from the frame attachment points.
    12.  
    13. Remove the wheel speed sensor mounting bolts and nuts.
    14.  
    15. Remove the two 11 mm splash shield mounting bolts.
    16.  
    17. Remove the wheel speed sensor and splash shield assembly.
    18.  
    19. Remove the splash shield gasket.
    20.  
    21. Clean the gasket and knuckle surfaces thoroughly using a dry cloth.

    To install:

    1. Install the splash shield gasket.
    2.  
    3. Install the wheel speed sensor splash shield.
    4.  
    5. Install the two 11 mm splash shield mounting bolts.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the splash shield mounting bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Tighten the speed sensor mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Install the harness clips, the fastening bolts and the nuts to the frame attachment points.
    12.  
    13. Install the hub and rotor.
    14.  
    15. Install the brake caliper.
    16.  
    17. Install the tire and wheel.
    18.  

    4-Wheel Drive
    1. Raise the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake caliper.
    6.  
    7. Remove the hub and rotor.
    8.  
    9. Remove the wheel speed sensor mounting clip on the control arm.
    10.  
    11. Remove the wheel speed sensor mounting clip on the frame rail.
    12.  
    13. Remove the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
      WARNING
      Carefully remove the sensor by pulling it straight out of the bore. DO NOT use a screwdriver, or other device to pry the sensor out of the bore. Prying will cause the sensor body to break off in the bore.


      WARNING
      The wheel speed sensor mounts into a bore that leads to the center of the sealed bearing. Use caution when cleaning or working around the bore. Do not contaminate the lubricant inside the sealed bearing. Failure to do so can lead to premature bearing failure.

    14.  
    15. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the hub and bearing assembly.

    To install:


    NOTE
    The new speed sensor will have a new O-ring. Dispose of the old O-ring. Lubricate the new O-ring lightly with bearing grease prior to installation. You may also lubricate the sensor just above and below the new O-ring. Do Not lubricate the bore.

    1. Install the sensor into the hub and bearing assembly.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the sensor mounting bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
      NOTE
      The new sensor has new mounting clips already installed on the wire. Do not reuse the old clips.

    4.  
    5. Install the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Install wheel speed sensor mounting clip to the frame rail.
    8.  
    9. Install the wheel speed sensor mounting clip to the control arm.
    10.  
    11. Install the hub and rotor.
    12.  
    13. Install the brake caliper.
    14.  
    15. Install the tire and wheel.
    16.  

    Front
    1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake rotor .
    6.  
    7. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the upper control arm.
    10.  
    11. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the frame attachment point.
    12.  
    13. Remove the WSS cable electrical connector.
    14.  
    15. Remove the wheel speed sensor (WSS) mounting bolt.
      WARNING
      Carefully remove the sensor by pulling it straight out of the bore. DO NOT use a screwdriver, or other device to pry the sensor out of the bore. Prying will cause the sensor body to break off in the bore.

    17. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the hub/bearing assembly.

    To install:

    9. Install the WSS mounting bolt.
      1. Tighten the WSS mounting bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

    11. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the knuckle.
    12.  
    13. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the upper control arm.
    14.  
    15. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the frame attachment point.
    16.  
    17. Connect the WSS cable electrical connector.
    18.  
    19. Install the brake rotor.
    20.  
    21. Install the tire and wheel.
    22.  
    23. Using a scan tool, perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS
    24.  

    Rear

    NOTE
    The signal for the rear wheel comes from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted to the transmission tail housing (2WD) or to the transfer case (4WD).

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt and sensor by pulling the sensor from the transmission or transfer case housing.
      1. Fluid will drip out of the opening, so be ready to catch the spillage.
      2.  

    8.  

    To install:

    1. Install a new O-ring on the vehicle speed sensor and coat with transmission fluid.
    2.  
    3. Install the sensor, bolts and torque to:
      1. Automatic transmission: 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
      2.  
      3. Manual transmission: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
      4.  

    4.  
    5. Connect the electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Connect the negative battery cable and check transaxle or transmission fluid level.
    8.  


    NOTE

      3. Manual transmission NV3500 and NV4500: 142 inch lbs. (16 Nm)
      4.  
      5. Manual transmission ZF S6-650: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
      6.  

    4.  
    5. Connect the electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Connect the negative battery cable and check transaxle or transmission fluid level.
    8.  

    Rear Wheel Mounted
    1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the tire and wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake rotor .
    6.  
    7. Remove the WSS cable mounting clip from the frame attachment point.
    8.  
    9. Remove the WSS cable electrical connector.
    10.  
    11. Remove the wheel speed sensor (WSS) mounting bolt.
      WARNING
      Carefully remove the sensor by pulling it straight out of the bore. DO NOT use a screwdriver, or other device to pry the sensor out of the bore. Prying will cause the sensor body to break off in the bore.

    12.  
    13. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the hub/bearing assembly.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Plug the WSS bore to prevent debris from falling into the hub.
    2.  
    3. Using a wire brush or equivalent, clean the WSS mounting surface on the hub to remove any rust or corrosion.
    4.  
    5. Apply a thin layer of wheel bearing lubricant to the hub surface and the sensor O-ring prior to sensor installation.
    6.  
    7. Install the WSS. Ensure that the sensor is seated flat against the hub.
    8.  
    9. Install the WSS mounting bolt.
      1. Tighten the WSS mounting bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
      2.  

    10.  
    11. Install the WSS cable mounting clip to the frame attachment point.
    12.  
    13. Connect the WSS cable electrical connector.
    14.  
    15. Install the brake rotor.
    16.  
    17. Install the tire and wheel.
    18.  
    19. Using a scan tool, perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS
    20.  

    Transmission Mounted

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Unplug the sensor connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt and sensor by pulling the sensor from the transmission or transfer case housing.
      1. Fluid will drip out of the opening, so be ready to catch the spillage.
      2.  

    8.  

    To install:

    1. Install a new O-ring on the vehicle speed sensor and coat with transmission fluid.
    2.  
    3. Install the sensor, tighten the bolts and torque to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Engage the electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Connect the negative battery cable and check transaxle or transmission fluid level.
