Removal & Installation

CAUTION
Before beginning this procedure, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section. Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering linkage cover bolts and cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inner fender skirt.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the compressor/condenser hose.
  16.  
  17. Discard the sealing washers. Cap all of the openings.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the electrical connections.
  20.  
  21. Reposition the lower EGR pipe connection for clearance.
  22.  
  23. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts. The lower right bolt will stay with the compressor due to a lack of clearance.
  24.  
  25. Remove the A/C compressor from the bracket through the fender well.
  26.  
  27. Remove the A/C compressor from the bottom on the RWD 2500 series vehicles only.
  28.  
  29. Drain, measure, and dispose of the compressor oil.

To install:

  1. Fill the compressor with the same amount of PAG oil that was removed.
  2.  
  3. Install the A/C compressor to the bracket through the fender well. Insert the mounting bolt into the lower right mounting boss before installing the A/C compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
    1. Tighten the mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Reposition the lower EGR pipe connection.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connection.
  10.  
  11. Install the refrigerant hose to the compressor using new sealing washers.
  12.  
  13. Install the inner fender skirt.
  14.  
  15. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering linkage cover and cover bolts.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the A/C drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Recharge the A/C system.
  26.  
  27. Inspect the system for leaks.
  28.  

4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, 6.5L & 7.4L Engines




CAUTION
Before beginning this procedure, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section. Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the refrigerant hose assembly from the compressor.
  8.  
  9. Cap or plug all of the open connections.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors, as necessary.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the compressor from the bracket.
  16.  
  17. Drain the compressor oil.
  18.  
  19. Measure the compressor oil.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Fill the compressor with same amount of PAG oil that was removed.
  2.  
  3. Install the compressor to the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the compressor mounting bolts.
    1. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connectors, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the refrigerant hose assembly to the compressor.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Charge the system.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the system for leaks.
  18.  

4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.6L & 8.1L Engines




CAUTION
Before beginning this procedure, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section. Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering linkage cover bolts and cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inner fender skirt.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the compressor/condenser hose.
