Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Allow the control arms to hang free.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Shock absorber assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Install tool J-23028, or equivalent, under the lower control arm and a jack. Install a safety chain around the spring and through the lower control arm.

    Stabilizer shaft from the lower control arm. Remove the tension on the lower control arm bolts.
     
    Lower control arm rear bolt, than the other retaining bolt
     
    Spring assembly
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Chain and spring. If you used spring compressors, install the spring and compressors.
     

  2.  
  3. Be sure the insulator is in place and the tape is towards the bottom of the spring. Position the gripper notch on the top coil in the frame bracket.
  4.  
  5. Be sure one drain hole in the lower arm is covered by the bottom coil and the other is open.
  6.  
  7. Slowly raise the lower control arm. Guide the control arm into place with a prybar.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not tighten the bolts yet. The bolts must be tightened with the vehicle at its proper ride height.



    Pivot shaft bolts, front one first. The bolts must be installed with the heads towards the front of the vehicle. Remove the safety chain or spring compressors.
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the jack.

    Stabilizer bar to the lower control arm. Torque the nuts to 24 ft lbs. (33 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Wheel
     

  12.  
  13. Once the weight of the vehicle is on the wheels, bounce the vehicle 2 or 3 times by pushing down on the front bumper a couple of inches. When the vehicle settles, tighten the front nut first,, then the rear nut to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine protection shield
     
    Frame cross bar (25 series only)
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Front stabilizer shaft link
     

  4.  
  5. Install tool J23028-15 using the outboard locating tab (15 Series), or, the inboard locating tab (25 Series).

  7. Attach the retaining hook to the control arm. Tighten the wing nut until you eliminate any free play.

  9. Securely attach tool J23028-01 to a suitable transmission jack. Raise tool Jack until the yokes of tool J23028-01 line up with the notches in J23028-15.
  10.  
  11. Using the tools and the transmission jack, relieve the spring tension from the lower control arm pivot bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm pivot bolt nuts (15 Series)
     
    Rear pivot bolt
     
    Front pivot bolt

  15. Slowly lower the transmission jack in order to unload the front coil spring. It may be necessary to use a pry bar in order to guide the lower control arm out of position.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Coil spring and the insulator to the lower control arm
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission jack in order to compress the front coil spring. It may be necessary to use a pry bar in order to guide the lower control arm into position.

    Front pivot bolt (15 Series)
     
    Rear pivot bolt
     
    Lower control arm pivot nuts. Tighten the pivot bolt nuts to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. Lower tool Jack. Remove the tool from the control arm.

    Front stabilizer shaft link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Frame cross bar (25 series only). Tighten the nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     
    Engine protection shield
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine protection shield
     
    Frame cross bar (2500 series only)
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Front stabilizer shaft link
     

  4.  
  5. Install tool J23028-15 using the outboard locating tab (1500 Series), or, the inboard locating tab (2500 Series).

  7. Attach the retaining hook to the control arm. Tighten the wing nut until free-play is eliminated.

  9. Securely attach tool J23028-01 to a suitable transmission jack. Raise the jack until the yokes of tool J23028-01 line up with the notches in J23028-15.
  10.  
  11. Using the tools and the transmission jack, relieve the spring tension from the lower control arm pivot bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm pivot bolt nuts
     
    Rear pivot bolt
     
    Front pivot bolt

  14.  
  15. Slowly lower the transmission jack in order to unload the front coil spring. It may be necessary to use a pry bar in order to guide the lower control arm out of position.
  16.  
  17. Remove the coil spring and the insulator.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring and the insulator to the lower control arm.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission jack in order to compress the front coil spring. It may be necessary to use a pry bar in order to guide the lower control arm into position.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Front pivot bolt
     
    Rear pivot bolt
     
    Lower control arm pivot nuts. Tighten the pivot bolt nuts to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the jack. Remove the tool from the control arm.

    Front stabilizer shaft link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Frame cross bar (2500 series only). Tighten the nuts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
     

  8.  
  9. Install the engine protection shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
  12.
