Ignition Lock Cylinder

Removal & Installation



  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to the Chassis Electrical Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the knee bolster.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column trim covers from the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wire harness assembly from the steering column and the wire harness strap.
  10.  
  11. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly out of the bulkhead connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the key alarm connector (1) from the lock module assembly (2) in the following way:
    1. Rotate the key alarm connector (1) 90 degrees.
    2.  
    3. Pull the key alarm connector (1) out of the lock module assembly (2).

  15. Remove the passkey connector from the lock module assembly (2).
  16.  
  17. Remove the connector (2) from the electric park lock (1), for vehicles equipped with floor shifters.

  19. Remove the ignition switch from the lock module using the J 42759.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition switch to the lock module.
  2.  
  3. Install the key alarm connector into the lock module assembly.
    1. Push the key alarm connector into the lock module assembly.
    2.  
    3. Rotate the key alarm connector 90 degrees so that the key alarm connector locks into place.
    4.

  5. Install the passkey connector into the lock module assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the connector (2) to the electric park lock (1) for vehicles equipped with floor shifters.

  9. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch into the bulkhead connector.
  10.  
  11. Attach the wire harness assembly to the steering column wire harness strap.
  12.  
  13. Connect the steering column electrical connectors to the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the trim covers to the column.
  16.  
  17. Install the knee bolster.
  18.  
  19. Enable the SIR system.
    NOTE
    It may be necessary to reprogram the theft deterrent system if the module was replaced.

CAUTION
When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Position the steering wheel half way between the upper and lower tilt stops.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Roll back the shift lever seal from the upper and the lower shrouds.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 TORX® screws from the lower steering column shroud.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 2 TORX® screws from the upper steering column shroud.
  16.  
  17. Lift the upper steering column shroud to gain access to the lock cylinder access hole.

  19. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the START position. Using the bent tip awl, push down on the ignition lock cylinder retaining pin.

  21. Release the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the lock module assembly by pulling the ignition lock cylinder away from the steering column.

To install:

  1. Insert the ignition lock cylinder through the upper shroud.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition lock cylinder to the lock module assembly by doing the following procedure:

    Align the positioning slot and locking tab slot on the lock module assembly to the positioning tab and locking tab on the ignition lock cylinder.
     
    Push the ignition lock cylinder into the lock module assembly until the locking tab locks against the locking tab slot.

  5. Install the 2 TORX® screws to the upper shroud and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower shroud.
  8.  
  9. Install the shift lever seal to the upper and the lower shrouds.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system.
  14.  
  15. Connect the battery negative cable.
  16.  
  17. Perform the Passlock learn procedure.
  18.

  11. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly out of the bulkhead connector.

  13. Remove the key alarm connector from the lock module assembly in the following way:

  15. Rotate the key alarm connector 90 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Pull the key alarm connector out of the lock module assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the passkey connector from the lock module assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the connector from the electric park lock, for vehicles equipped with floor shifters.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition switch from the lock module using tool J42759 or equivalent.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition switch to the lock module
  2.  
  3. Install the key alarm connector into the lock module assembly.
  4.  
  5. Push the key alarm connector into the lock module assembly.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the key alarm connector 90 degrees so that the key alarm connector locks into place.
  8.  
  9. Install the passkey connector into the lock module assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the connector to the electric park lock, for vehicles equipped with floor shifters.
  12.  
  13. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch into the bulkhead connector.
  14.  
  15. Attach the wire harness assembly to the steering column wire harness strap.
  16.  
  17. Connect the steering column electrical connectors to the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install the trim covers to the column.
  20.  
  21. Install the knee bolster.
  22.  
  23. Enable the SIR system.
  24.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Lower the hush and knee bolster.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  8.  
  9. With the key installed, turn the key to the RUN position.
  10.  
  11. Install an Allen wrench into the hole on top of the lock cylinder housing. Push down on the Allen wrench to release the tab on the lock cylinder inside the lock cylinder housing.
  12.  
  13. Slide the lock cylinder out of the lock cylinder housing.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the key into the lock cylinder.
    NOTE
    The gears between the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing must be in the correct position. Failure to do so will cause a misalignment of the gears in the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing, which may result in a NO START or BATTERY DRAIN.

  3. Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear clockwise to the start position - allowing it to spring return into the RUN position.
  4.  
  5. Align the lock cylinder and install into the lock cylinder housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column trim covers. .
  8.  
  9. Install the hush and knee bolster.
  10.  
  11. Enable the SIR system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
