Multi-Function (Combination) Switch

Removal & Installataion




CAUTION
When performing service around the SIR system components or wiring, the SIR system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded SIR system repairs.

  1. Make sure the switch is in the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the tilt wheel lever by pulling it out.
  6.  
  7. Remove the knee bolster and the Torx® head screws from the lower column cover.
  8.  
  9. Lower the cover by tilting it down and then sliding it back to disengage the locking tabs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the Torx® head screws from the upper column cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering column lock set and the upper cover.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wiring harness straps from the steering column wiring harness.
  16.  
  17. Remove the retainer from Connector Position Assurance (CPA) if equipped.
  18.  
  19. Disengage the connector from the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Unplug the gray and black connectors from the bulkhead connector.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten the Torx® head screws from the switch and remove the switch.

To install:

Installation is the reverse of removal but please note the following important steps.

  1. Install the switch. Use a small blade screwdriver to compress the electrical contact and move the switch into position. The electrical contact must rest on the canceling cam assembly.
  2.  
  3. Fasten the Torx® head screws on the switch. Tighten the screws to 53 inch. lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper column cover and fasten the column bracket nuts. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the knee bolster and the steering column cylinder lock. Tighten the column cover Torx® screws to 12 inch. lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower column cover and tighten the Torx® screws 53 inch. lbs. (6 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Make sure the switch is in the OFF position and install the steering wheel. Refer to this section for this procedure.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system (if equipped).
  14.  

  1. Ensure the lever is in the center or the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inflator module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the horn switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tilt lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the knee bolster.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the steering column bracket nuts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 2 screws from the lower column cover.
  20.  
  21. Tilt the cover down. Slide the cover back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower column cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the screw from the upper column cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the upper column cover.
  28.  
  29. Remove the 2 wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness.
  30.  
  31. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer from the brake transmission shift interlock.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wire harness.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the gray and the black connectors of the switch from the column bulkhead connector.
  36.  
  37. Remove the 2 screws from the switch.
  38.  
  39. Remove the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Install the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch. Use a small blade screwdriver in order to compress the electrical contact. Ensure the electrical contact rests on the canceling cam assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the 2 screws on the switch.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the connectors of the switch to the column bulkhead connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wire harness.
  10.  
  11. Install the connector and the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer to the brake transmission shift interlock.
  12.  
  13. Install the 2 wire straps on the steering column wire harness.
  14.  
  15. Install the upper column cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering column bracket nuts.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the knee bolster.
  22.  
  23. Install the screw to the upper column cover.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the screw to 15 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the lower column cover.
  28.  
  29. Install the 2 screws to the lower column cover.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the screws to 25 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Ensure the lever is in the center or the OFF position.
  34.  
  35. Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft.
  36.  

  1. Disable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower trim covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tilt lever if equipped.
    NOTE
    The abrasion sleeve located on the steering column wire harness assembly must be reinstalled. Make note of what connector is coming out of the abrasion sleeve for installation purposes.

  6.  
  7. Remove the wire harness assembly from the wire harness strap.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly connector from the SIR system coil connector.
  10.  
  11. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly out of the bulkhead connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws and from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly from the steering column tilt head assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly onto the steering column tilt head assembly.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly rests on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

  3. Screw the 2 pan head tapping screws and into the turn signal and multifunction assembly.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the top pan head tapping screw to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the side pan head tapping screw to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly into the bulkhead connector.
  10.  
  11. Connect the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly connector to the SIR coil connector.
    NOTE
    The abrasion sleeve must be installed back onto the steering column wire harness assembly. The ignition lock cylinder case wires and connector must be hanging out of the middle of the abrasion sleeve.

  12.  
  13. Install the wire harness assembly into the wire harness strap.
  14.  
  15. Install the upper and lower trim covers.
  16.  
  17. Enable the SIR system.
  18.

  6.  
  7. Unfasten the screws from the switch and remove the switch. Detach the electrical connection.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the switch mounting screws to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).

  3. Enable the SIR system.
