Axle Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the lubricant from the axle housing
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Wheel, the brake drum or hub and the drum assembly
     
    Parking brake cable from the lever and at the brake flange plate
     
    Hydraulic brake lines from the connectors
     
    Shock absorbers from the axle brackets
     
    Vent hose from the axle vent fitting, if equipped
     
    Height sensing and brake proportional valve linkage, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer shaft, if equipped
     

  6.  
  7. Support the axle assembly with a jack.

    U-bolts
     
    Spring plates and spacers
     
    Axle assembly
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Raise the axle assembly into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    U-bolts
     
    Spring plates and spacers
     
    Nuts and washers on the U-bolts. Torque the nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer shaft, if equipped
     
    Height sensing and brake proportional valve linkage, if equipped
     
    Vent hose at the axle vent fitting, if equipped
     
    Shock absorbers at the axle brackets
     
    Hydraulic brake lines
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Wheels
     
    Driveshaft
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the axle housing.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the lubricant from the axle housing
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Wheel, the brake drum or hub and the drum assembly
     
    Parking brake cable from the lever and at the brake flange plate
     
    Hydraulic brake lines from the connectors
     
    Shock absorbers from the axle brackets
     
    Vent hose from the axle vent fitting, if equipped
     
    Height sensing and brake proportional valve linkage, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer shaft, if equipped
     

  6.  
  7. Support the axle assembly with a jack.

    U-bolts
     
    Spring plates and spacers
     
    Axle assembly
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Raise the axle assembly into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    U-bolts
     
    Spring plates and spacers
     
    Nuts and washers on the U-bolts. Torque the nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer shaft, if equipped
     
    Height sensing and brake proportional valve linkage, if equipped
     
    Vent hose at the axle vent fitting, if equipped
     
    Shock absorbers at the axle brackets
     
    Hydraulic brake lines
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Wheels
     
    Driveshaft
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the axle housing.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Axle lubricant
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Wheel assemblies
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Brake calipers
     
    Shock absorbers from the axle brackets
     
    Vent hose from the rear axle vent fitting
     
    Nuts and the washers from the U-bolts
     
    U-bolts, the spring plates and the spacers form the axle assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the axle assembly.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Place the rear axle assembly under the vehicle. Align the rear axle assembly with the springs. Connect the spacers, the spring plates and the U-bolts to the rear axle. Raise the rear axle assembly into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Washers and nuts to the U-bolts. Tighten the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) first, then to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
     
    Vent hose to the rear axle vent fitting
     
    Shock absorbers to the rear axle
     
    Brake calipers
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Wheel assemblies
     
    Propeller shaft
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the rear axle.
  6.  
  7. Bleed the brake system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
  10.  

9.75 Inch Axles
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering gear protection shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle lubricant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear axle assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering knuckles.
  10.  
  11. Remove the axle shafts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the differential.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive pinion shaft yoke and the pinion oil seal.
  16.  
  17. Remove the drive pinion and the outer pinion bearing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pinion bearing cups.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the pinion bearing cups.
  2.  
  3. Install the drive pinion outer pinion bearing and the pinion oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Install the drive pinion.
  6.  
  7. Install the pinion yoke.
  8.  
  9. Install the differential case.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the side bearing preload.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the backlash.
  14.  
  15. Install the axle shafts.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering knuckles.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear axle.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering gear protection shield.
  22.  
  23. Fill the axle with lubricant.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  

Except 9.75 Inch Axles
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the axle lubricant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear axle assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper brackets.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel hub on 10.5 inch axles.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear axle cover housing and gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake backing plates.
  14.  
  15. Remove the axle shafts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the differential.
  18.  
  19. Remove the drive pinion.
  20.  
  21. Remove the drive pinion shaft yoke and the seal.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the drive pinion.
  2.  
  3. Install the differential case.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the side bearing preload.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the backlash.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake backing plates.
  10.  
  11. Install the axle shafts.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear axle housing cover and gasket.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper brackets.
  16.  
  17. Install the wheel hub on 10.5 inch axles.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear axle.
  20.  
  21. Fill the axle with lubricant.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
