Rear Wheel Steering Gear Motor

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spare tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts retaining the steering gear motor to the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering gear motor from the steering gear.
  8.  
  9. Cover the steering gear motor opening to keep contamination out of the oil in the planetary gear assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiring harness from the retaining clips.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wiring harness from the control module.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear position sensor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering gear motor and wiring harness from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the O-ring seal to the steering gear.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering gear motor to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts retaining the steering gear motor to the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the 0.24 in. (6 mm) bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and the 0.16 in. (4mm) bolts to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connectors to the control module and rear position sensor.
  10.  
  11. Connect the wire harness retaining clips.
  12.  
  13. Install the spare tire.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid from the differential housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts retaining the steering gear protection shield.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the control module.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear position sensor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the differential vent hose from the vent tube.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts retaining the steering gear actuator and cover to the differential.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering gear actuator and cover from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear actuator and gasket to the differential.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering gear actuator and cover retaining bolts and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connectors to the control module.
  6.  
  7. Install the differential vent hose to the vent tube.
  8.  
  9. Install the outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckle
  10.  
  11. Install the drain plug and fill the differential with fluid.
  12.  
  13. Install the bolts retaining the steering gear protection shield and tighten to 132 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the tire and wheel.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Check the wheel alignment.
  20.
