Escape, Mariner, Escape Hybrid 2001-2005

Description & Operation

The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) module simultaneously manages the anti-lock braking, traction control and engine control systems to maintain vehicle control during deceleration and acceleration.

When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the module carries out a preliminary electrical check and, at approximately 12 mph (20 km/h), the hydraulic pump motor is turned on for approximately one half-second. Any malfunction of the anti-lock brake system disables the traction control and stability assist (if equipped) and the anti-lock brake warning indicator illuminates. However, the power-assist braking system functions normally.

The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) consists of the following components:

Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU)
ABS control module
Rear anti-lock brake sensor
Rear anti-lock brake sensor indicator
Front anti-lock brake sensor
Front anti-lock brake sensor indicator
Yellow ABS warning indicator
Red brake warning indicator
