Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Place jack stands at the front end of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Support the axle with jack stands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the upper stabilizer shaft link from the frame.
  10.  
  11. Reference mark the rear propeller shaft to the rear axle pinion yoke.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the propeller shaft from the axle. Support the propeller shaft as necessary.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower mount of the shock absorbers.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the vent hose.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the park brake cables.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the junction block and brake pipe.
  22.  
  23. Remove and wire the calipers out of the way.
  24.  
  25. Remove the nuts and the washers from the spring assembly U-bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the U-bolts, the anchor plates and the spacers from the axle.
  28.  
  29. Remove the axle with the aid of a hydraulic assist.
  30.  
  31. Remove the stabilizer shaft U-bolt nuts and the U-bolts from the axle if necessary.
  32.  
  33. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the axle if necessary.

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer shaft to the axle if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install the stabilizer shaft clamps, the U-bolts, and the nuts if necessary. Do not torque the stabilizer shaft U-bolt nuts at this time.
  4.  
  5. Place the axle under the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Raise the axle to the springs with the aid of a hydraulic assist. Align the axle with the springs.
  8.  
  9. Install the spacers, the anchor plates and the U-bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the washers if equipped and the nuts to the U-bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern to:
    1. Express/Savana and 2005-06 Avalanche

      1500 series: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
       
      2500 series: 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm)

    3. 2007 Avalanche

      1500 series: 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
       
      2500 series: 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm)

  13. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the frame if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Install the stabilizer shaft link bolt and the nut
  16.  
  17. Tighten the stabilizer shaft U-bolt nuts.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake calipers.
  20.  
  21. Install the brake pipe fitting brackets.
  22.  
  23. Install the brake pipe.
  24.  
  25. Install the brake pipe junction block.
  26.  
  27. Connect the park brake cables.
  28.  
  29. Connect the vent hose to the axle vent fitting.
  30.  
  31. Install the shock absorbers to the lower mount bracket.
  32.  
  33. Install the shock absorber bolts and the nuts.
  34.  
  35. Install the propeller shaft to the pinion yoke. Align the reference marks made during removal.
  36.  
  37. Install the propeller shaft yoke retaining clamps and the bolts.
  38.  
  39. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  40.  
  41. Fill the axle with lubricant.
  42.  
  43. Remove the jack stands.
  44.  
  45. Lower the vehicle.
