Removal & Installation
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the power steering line fittings are disconnected.
Remove the engine air cleaner.
Disconnect the steering gear coupling shield from the line fittings and slide the shield upward on the intermediate shaft.
Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
During installation, do not overtighten the fittings.
Disconnect the power steering lines. Discard the Teflon® seals.
Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the cotter pin and the drag link-to-sector shaft nut. Discard the cotter pin.
Using a puller, disconnect the drag link from the sector shaft arm.
The sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut has a dry adhesive on the threads. The nut must not be reused.
Remove the sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut. Discard the nut.
The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear. Discard the bolts.
Using a puller, remove the sector shaft arm.
To install, reverse the removal procedure. Note the following:
Using special tool 211-D027, install 2 new Teflon® seals on the power steering line fittings.
intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt 36 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
power steering lines: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
drag link-to-sector shaft nut: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut: 350 ft. lbs. (475 Nm)
steering gear: 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm)
Fill the power steering system.
