    FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS CRV 4WD Models

The rear differential used in CRV models with 4WD uses the fluid not only to lubricate the gears and bearings in the unit, it is also used as a hydraulic fluid by the internal pump that engages the differential clutch pack. Using the correct lubricant is imperative, and failure to do so may result in poor performance and internal damage.

The manufacturer recommends using Honda CVT Fluid for this application, however for temporary use, a Dexron®III automatic transmission fluid can be substituted.

    WARNING
Failure to use the correct fluid may cause the unit to malfunction and may cause severe internal damage.

The fluid level should be checked during routine maintenance procedures or at least once a year. The fluid replacement intervals vary depending on the conditions and type of use (normal or severe) the vehicle receives. The fluid replacement intervals are as follows:

Normal: Every 90,000 miles (144,000 km) or 6 years, whichever occurs first

Severe: Every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or 4 years, whichever occurs first

    LEVEL CHECK CRV 4WD Models

The fluid level is checked by removing the hex head fill plug on the left side of the differential housing, near the axle. Do not confuse the level check plug with the drain plug located beneath the level check plug.

    To check the fluid level:

    1. Make sure the vehicle is level.
    2.
    3. Place a small drain pan beneath the fluid level check plug and remove the plug.
    4.
    5. If a small amount of fluid drips out of the fill plug, the fluid level is within specification. If no fluid is released, check the level to see if it meets the threaded hole of the fill plug. If the fluid meets the threads, the fluid level is within specification. If the fluid level is low, top off as necessary.
    6.
    7. Once the fluid level has been verified or properly topped off, reinstall the check level plug and torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
    8.

DRAIN & REFILL CRV 4WD Models

    1. Make sure the vehicle is level.
    2.
    3. Place a small drain pan beneath the fluid level drain plug.
    4.
    5. Remove the hex head fluid level check/fill plug, and then remove the drain plug.
    6.
    7. Allow the fluid to completely drain and then install the drain plug and torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
    8.
    9. Using a funnel with a flexible spout, top off the differential using the recommended CVT fluid, or as a temporary substitute, use Dexron®III automatic transmission fluid. The fluid capacity for a fluid change is 1.1 quarts (1.0 L).
    10.
    11. Top off the differential until a small amount of fluid drips out of the threaded fill plug. Once the fluid meets the threads, the fluid level is within specification.
    12.
    13. Once the fluid level has been properly topped off, reinstall the check level/fill plug and torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
