Vehicle Identification Number


The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer code:

1FA-Ford Motor Company, USA, passenger car
3FA-Ford Motor Company, Mexico, passenger car

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle restraint type code:

F-Active safety belts-all positions, driver and front passenger air bags
H-Active safety belts-all positions, driver and front passenger air bags with driver and front passenger side impact air bags

Positions five through seven indicate vehicle line, series and body type:

P31-three-door sedan-ZX3
P34-four-door sedan-SE
P36-four-door station wagon-SE
P37-five-door sedan-ZX5
P38-four-door sedan-ZTS

The eighth VIN position identifies the engine displacement and number of cylinders:

N-DURATEC-2.0L, DOHC, four-cylinder
Z-2.3L (4V), DOHC, four-cylinder

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.

The tenth VIN position is the model year code:


The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code:

W-Wayne-Wayne, Michigan

The last six VIN positions are a numeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number:
