The canister functions to direct evaporating fuel (vapor) from the fuel tank and engine fuel system into the intake manifold and eventually into the cylinders for combustion with the normal fuel charge. The activated charcoal within the canister acts as a storage device for the fuel vapor at times when the engine is not operating or when the engine operating condition will not permit fuel vapor to burn efficiently. All Aerostars are equipped with engine compartment mounted, activated carbon canisters. The canister is mounted on the bottom of the right hand fender apron.

The only required service for for the evaporative canister is inspection at the interval specified in the maintenance chart. If the charcoal element is saturated with fuel, the entire canister should be replaced. Disconnect the canister purge hose(s), loosen the canister retaining bracket and lift up the canister to disengage the tab on the back side. Installation is the reverse of removal.
