Ford Aerostar 1986-1997 Repair Guide

Rear Axle

The rear axle code may be found in two places on the vehicle. One is on the SCC label attached to the left driver's side door lock post. The code appears as a number or letter/number combination in the "Axle" column of the label. The rear axle ID code is also stamped on a metal tag hanging from the axle cover-to-carrier bolt at the 2 o'clock bolt position.

Four rear axles are used on the Aerostar.

1986-96: Ford 7.5 in. (190mm) ring gear
1987-89: Dana 30, 7 in. (181mm) ring gear
1990-96: Dana 35-1A, 7 in. (181mm) ring gear
1990-96: Ford 9 in. (223mm) ring gear

The Ford 7.5 inch is available in both standard and Traction-Lok versions.

The Ford 9 inch is used on 1990-96 models with the rear anti-lock brake system.

All axles are integral carrier type.
