Fig. Fig. 1: The temperature sending unit location-2.0L engine

The sending unit is located on the thermostat housing on the 2.0L engine and on the water crossover tube on the 2.5L engine.

    TESTING

    1. Check the appropriate fuse before attempting any other diagnostics.
    2.
    3. Disconnect the sending unit electrical harness.
    4.

    CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

    1. Remove the radiator cap and place a mechanic's thermometer in the coolant.
    2.
    3. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the sending unit terminals.
    4.
    5. Resistance should be high (74 ohms) with engine coolant cold and low (9.7 ohms) with engine coolant hot.
    6.

It is best to check resistance with the engine cool, then start the engine and watch the resistance change as the engine warms.

    1. If resistance does not drop as engine temperature rises, the sending unit is faulty.
    2.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. On the 2.5L engine, remove the air cleaner-to-throttle body hose.
    4.
    5. Disconnect the sending unit electrical harness.
    6.
    7. Drain the engine coolant below the level of the switch.
    8.
    9. Remove the sending unit from the engine using the proper size socket (Usually an 11 / 16 inch or 17mm).
    10.

    To install:
    1. Coat the new sending unit with Teflon® tape or electrically conductive sealer.
    2.
    3. Install the sending unit and tighten to 62-89 inch lbs. (7-10 Nm) on the 2.0L engine and 13-18 ft. lbs. (18-24 Nm).
    4.
    5. Attach the sending unit's electrical connector.
    6.
    7. Fill the engine with coolant.
    8.
    9. Start the engine, allow it to reach operating temperature ,bleed the cooling system and check for leaks.
    10.
    11. Check for proper sending unit operation.
