    Ford Escort/Tracer 1991-1999 Repair Guide

    Valve Lifters

    Print

All engines covered in this guide, except the 2.0L DOHC engine, employ hydraulic (oil pressurized) valve lifters. These lifters operate more quietly and do not require periodic adjustments.

For the 2.0L DOHC engine's valve clearance adjustment, refer to General Information & Maintenance of this guide.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    1.8L Engine
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Remove the camshafts.
    4.
    5. Mark the hydraulic lash adjusters and the cylinder head with alignment marks so the hydraulic lash adjusters can be installed in their original positions.
    6.
    7. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters from the cylinder head.
    8.

    To install:
    1. Apply clean engine oil to the hydraulic lash adjuster friction surfaces.
    2.
    3. If the hydraulic lash adjusters are being reused, install them in the positions from which they were removed.
    4.
    5. Make sure the hydraulic lash adjusters move smoothly in their bores.
    6.
    7. Install the camshafts.
    8.
    9. Connect the negative battery cable.
    10.

    1.9L Engines
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Remove rocker arm cover and gasket.
    4.
    5. Remove the rocker arms.
    6.
    7. Remove the lifter valve guides plates, retainers and the eight lifters.
    8.

Always return the lifters to their original bores unless they are being replaced.

    1. Lubricate each lifter bore with clean engine oil.
    2.
    3. If equipped with flat bottom lifters, install with the oil hole in the plunger upward. If equipped with roller lifters, install with the plunger upward and position the guide flats of lifters to be parallel with the centerline of the camshaft. The color orientation dots on the lifters should be opposite the oil feed holes in the cylinder head.
    4.
    5. For roller lifters only, install the lifter guide plates over the tappet guide flats with the notch toward the exhaust side. For flat lifters, no guide plate is required.
    6.
    7. Lubricate the lifter plunger cap and valve tip with engine oil.
    8.
    9. Install the lifter guide plate retainers into rocker arm fulcrum slots, in both the intake and exhaust side. Align the notch to be with the exhaust valve lifter.
    10.
    11. Install four rocker arms in lifter position Nos. 3, 6, 7 and 8.
    12.
    13. Lubricate the rocker arm surface that will contact the fulcrum surface with engine oil.
    14.
    15. Install four fulcrums. The fulcrums must be fully seated in the slots of cylinder head.
    16.
    17. Install four bolts. Tighten to 17-22 ft. lbs. (23-30 Nm).
    18.
    19. Rotate the engine until the camshaft sprocket keyway is in the 6 o'clock position.
    20.
    21. Repeat steps 9-12 in lifter position Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5.
    22.
    23. Install the rocker arm cover and gasket. Install the air cleaner assembly.
    24.
    25. Connect the negative battery cable.
    26.

    2.0L Engine

    SOHC ENGINE

If removing more than one valve lifter (tappet), mark the lifters and their locations as they must be installed in their original bores.

    1. Remove the valve cover and the rocker arm(s).
    2.
    3. Unfasten the lifter guide plate retainer.
    4.
    5. Remove the guide plate and the lifter.
    6.

    To install:
    1. The oil feed hole in the lifter must face away from the oil feed hole in the cylinder head.
    2.
    3. Lubricate the lifter(s) with clean 5W-30 engine oil and install them in their original bores.
    4.

Make sure the lifter guide plate retainer tabs are towards the rear of the cylinder head, and the lifter guide plate tabs are towards the front of the cylinder head.

    1. Install the lifter guide plate and tighten the retainer.
    2.
    3. Install the rocker arm and the valve cover.
    4.

    DOHC ENGINE

If the camshafts and lifters are to be reused, mark the lifters and their locations as they must be installed in their original bores.

    1. Remove the camshafts.
    2.
    3. Remove the lifters from the cylinder head.
    4.

    To install:
    1. Lubricate the lifter(s) with clean 5W-30 engine oil and install them in their original bores.
    2.
    3. Install the camshafts.
    4.

    Inspection
    1. Throughly clean the lifter and its bore, then check for pitting, scoring or excessive wear.
    2.
    3. On flat lifters, the bottom should be flat and not concave.
    4.
    5. If equipped with a roller, the roller should rotate freely without excessive play.
