See Figure 1

The Escort/Tracer is equipped with a hydraulic clutch control system. The system consists of a fluid reservoir, master cylinder, pressure line and a slave cylinder. The hydraulic clutch control system is tapped into the brake master cylinder reservoir and utilizes brake fluid for its operation.

Fig. Fig. 1: The clutch master cylinder is tapped into the brake master cylinder via a hose, and uses DOT 3 brake fluid

Use a DOT 3 brake fluid meeting Ford specifications, such as Ford Heavy Duty Brake Fluid.

Inspect the brake master cylinder fluid level through the translucent master cylinder reservoir. It should be between the MIN and MAX level marks embossed on the side of the reservoir. If the level is found to be low, remove the reservoir cap and fill to the MAX level with DOT 3 brake fluid.

Never reuse brake fluid that has been drained from the hydraulic system or fluid that has been allowed to stand in an open container for an extended period of time.
