How To Use PID Data

PID is an acronym for Parameter Identification Data. It is used to identify PCM related items on both OEM and aftermarket Scan Tools. The PID Data or data stream items available for display include:

PCM analog & digital input signals (ACT, ECT, IAT, MAP, TP)
PCM analog & digital output signals (EVR, FUELPW1, MIL)
PCM calculated values (VACUUM, LOAD, MISF, SPARK)
PCM system status information (OBD II I/M Readiness Status)

To view PID Data on a Scan Tool, connect the Scan Tool to the vehicle connector; then identify the vehicle by following the setup instructions, and select Data Stream or Parameter from the menu.

If a Scan Tool does not power up or read PID Data, verify that the power, ground and tool cable connections are all okay. To test if the tool is working properly, try it on another vehicle.

Information contained within the PID Data Charts can be used to:

Validate a repair procedure
Check the operation of a component before or after a repair
Check the operation of a component or system by viewing "live" data from the vehicle computer data stream
