Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Position a suitable pass through socket wrench onto the strut shaft nut.
  2.  
  3. Place a 10 mm six point deep socket on the strut top retaining nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the strut shaft while holding the retaining nut in place.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper shock mount and bearing assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coil spring.
  12.  
  13. To reassemble, reverse the disassembly procedure. Tighten the strut top retaining nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

Removal & Installation




NOTE
Do not allow the axle shaft to move outward as damage to the CV joint may result.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and place the steering column in the unlocked position.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar link nut
     
    Support the steering knuckle and remove the pinch bolt
     
    Upper strut mounting nuts
     

  4.  
  5. Push down on the steering knuckle until the strut is free of the steering knuckle and remove the strut.

To install:

  1. Push down on the steering knuckle and insert the bottom of the strut into the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper strut mounting nuts and tighten them to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install strut-to-wheel knuckle pinch bolt and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Stabilizer bar link nut and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
     
    Rotor
     
    Caliper
     
    Wheels
     

  8.  
  9. Check the wheel alignment.
  10.
