Removal & Installation

WARNING
Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate when the intermediate shaft is disconnect, or damage to the clockspring can result. If it is suspected that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and re-centered.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod end cotter pins and castle nuts
     
    Tie rod ends from the knuckles
     

  2.  
  3. Position the dash opening weather seal for the steering column out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pinch bolt retaining the steering column intermediate shaft coupling
     
    Steering gear retaining nuts/bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Rotate the rack and pinion assembly to clear the bolts from the front crossmember, and pull toward the driver-s side of the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and disconnect the power steering lines.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rack and pinion assembly through the driver-s side of the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install new Teflon® O-rings on the power steering line fittings.
  2.  
  3. Place the rack and pinion retaining bolts in the gear housing.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rack and pinion assembly through the driver-s side of the vehicle
     
    Power steering lines on the rack and pinion assembly
     
    Rack and pinion assembly on the crossmember
     
    Tie rod ends to the knuckles. Tighten the castle nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) and install the cotter pins.
     
    Rack and pinion assembly retaining bolts, and tighten them to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     

  6.  
  7. Using a new pinch bolt, install the steering column intermediate shaft coupling on the rack input shaft. Tighten the pinch bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Position the steering column opening weather seal over the steering gear housing.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Fill the power steering oil reservoir.
  14.  
  15. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  16.  
  17. Check for proper wheel alignment and steering wheel position.
