Axle Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear brake discs.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the brake lines and rear wheel speed sensor wire harness from the rear axle assembly.
    CAUTION
    The rear axle assembly must be supported before removal of the trackbar arm or the retaining bolts to prevent damage to the vehicle components.

  6.  
  7. Secure the axle to a suitable highlift jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the trackbar arm bolt. Remove the trackbar arm from the axle mounting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber lower bolts and nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nuts and the parking brake cable brackets.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear springs. The spring insulators may come out with the spring when the spring is removed.
  16.  
  17. Slowly lower the axle assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the trailing arm nuts and bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the axle assembly.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the axle assembly, making sure it is supported.
  2.  
  3. Install the trailing arm nuts and bolts and tighten to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Slowly raise the axle assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear springs. The spring insulators must be inserted when the spring is installed.
  8.  
  9. Install the nuts and the parking brake cable brackets and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the shock absorber lower bolts and nuts and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the trackbar arm to the axle mounting bracket. Install the trackbar arm bolt and tighten to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the brake lines and rear wheel speed sensor wire harness to the rear axle assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear brake discs.
  18.
