Ford Full-Size Cars 1968-1988 Repair Guide
PEDAL FREE TRAVEL
Disconnect the clutch return spring from the release lever.
Loosen the release lever adjusting nut and locknut, 2 or 3 turns.
Move the clutch release lever rearward until the throwout bearing can be felt to lightly contact the pressure plate fingers.
Adjust the rod length until the rod seats in the pocket in the release lever.
Insert a feeler gauge of specified thickness between the adjusting nut and swivel sleeve. Tighten the nut against the feeler gauge. Correct feeler gauge thicknesses are;
1968: 0.206 in. (5.23mm)
1969: 0.194 in. (4.93mm)
Tighten the locknut against the adjusting nut, being careful not to disturb the adjustment.
Connect the clutch return spring.
Make a final check with the engine running at 3000 rpm, and transmission in NEUTRAL. Under this condition, centrifugal weights on release fingers may reduce the clearance. Readjust, if necessary, to obtain at least
in. (13mm) free-play while maintaining the 3000 rpm.
