Ford Full-Size Cars 1968-1988 Repair Guide
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the positive battery cable. If the cable insulation on both the positive and negative cables are the same color, tag the cables before removing.
Remove the hold-down screws from the battery box, if equipped.
Remove the battery from the vehicle.
Before installing the battery in the vehicle, make sure that the battery terminals are clean and free from corrosion. Use a battery terminal cleaner on the terminals and on the inside of the battery cable ends. If a cleaner is not available, use a heavy sandpaper to remove the corrosion. A mixture of baking soda and water will neutralize any acid.
Place the battery in the vehicle. Install the cables on the terminals. Tighten the nuts on the cable ends. Smear a light coating of grease on the cable ends and the tops of the terminals. This will prevent buildup of oxidation on the terminals and the cable ends. Install and tighten the nuts of the battery box. Refer to
