Ford Mustang/Capri 1979-1988 Repair Guide

  1. Loosen the nuts that secure the cable ends to the battery terminals. Use a battery cable puller, if available, to separate the cable ends from the battery terminals. Otherwise, lift the battery cables from the terminals with a twisting motion.
  3. Remove the hold-down bolt(s) and bracket from the battery box or tray. Lift the battery from the vehicle.
  5. Before installing the battery in the vehicle, make sure that the battery terminals are clean and free from corrosion. Use a battery terminal cleaning tool on the terminals and on the inside of the battery cable ends. If a cleaner is not available, use a coarse sandpaper to remove the corrosion. A mixture of baking soda and water will neutralize any acid. Also, examine the battery box or tray for deterioration. Clean or replace as necessary.
  7. Place the battery in the vehicle. Install the hold-down bolt(s) and bracket, so that the battery is securely in place.
  9. Install the cables on the terminals and tighten the nuts on the cable ends. Smear a light coating of grease on the cable ends and the tops of the terminals. This will prevent a buildup of oxidized acid on the terminals and the cable ends.
