Ford Mustang/Capri 1979-1988 Repair Guide

General Recommendations

Ford cautions that the 4-140 turbocharged engine should not be used for trailer towing, in order to prevent engine damage. Ford also recommends a minimum 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission as the power train for towing Class l trailers of up to 1000 lbs. An external automatic transmission oil cooler is also recommended for any trailer towing other than the temporary, cross-town variety.

Your vehicle was primarily designed to carry passengers and cargo. It is important to remember that towing a trailer will place additional loads on your vehicle's engine, drive train, steering, braking and other systems. However, if you find it necessary to tow a trailer, using the proper equipment is a must.

Factory trailer towing packages are available for most vehicles. However, if you are installing a trailer hitch and wiring on your car, there are a few things that you ought to know. Local laws may require specific equipment such as trailer brakes or fender mounted mirrors. If in doubt, check with local authorities.
