All vehicles are equipped with a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) which appears on the instrument panel as the words CHECK ENGINE . This light should come on briefly when the ignition key is turned ON but should turn off when the engine is started. If the light stays on after the engine is started or if it comes on at any time during engine operation, a problem in the electronic engine control system is indicated; refer to the Self-Diagnostic System.
There are also 2 different service interval reminder systems, the Vehicle Maintenance Monitor or System Scanner. The Vehicle Maintenance Monitor is available only on vehicles with an analog instrument cluster. It will indicate a service interval check on a module located on the front center portion of the headliner, just above the rear view mirror. The System Scanner is found on vehicles with electronic instrument clusters. It will indicate a service interval check on a display, located in the lower left corner of the instrument cluster.
To reset the service interval light on vehicles equipped with the Vehicle Maintenance Monitor, insert a small pointed instrument into the service interval cancel switch. Depress the switch once.
To cancel the service check message on the System Scanner, press the SERV button on the keyboard, located to the right of the instrument cluster, and hold until 3 tones are sounded.
