There are two types of 5-speed manual transaxles used in the Probe. One type is for the 2.2L turbocharged and 3.0L engines and has special design features which enable it to handle the higher torque output of these engines. The other type is used only with the 2.2L non-turbocharged engine.
Both types have reverse gear synchromesh shifting and the 5th/reverse clutch hub assembly on the input shaft. The helical cut forward gears are in constant mesh with the corresponding gears on the opposing shaft. The forward gears are selected by means of a synchronizer mechanism. 3rd, 4th and 5th gears are mounted on the input shaft. First, 2nd and reverse gears are mounted on the main shaft. The reverse gears have straight cut teeth and are engaged through the reverse idler gear by means of a synchronizer mechanism.
The transaxle used with the 2.2L turbocharged and 3.0L engines has 3 separate shift rods for 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th and 5th/reverse, and uses needle bearings to reduce the sliding resistance of the forward gears.
